I've always been drawn towards instrumental music more than pop or rock songs or whatever's currently popular. It's what I listen to at work, or when I'm reading a book, or I'm feeling moody. There's something inherently more timeless about voices through the strings of a violin, or more impactful about emotions conveyed through a piano. Top 40 music by its very nature is fleeting. Orchestral music is not.
Two of my favorite pieces are by Bear McCreary, composer of Battlestar Galactica. These two are variations of the same theme, and both are classics in every sense of the word. If I had these on LP (remember these, kids?), the record would be so worn as to be unplayable. I actually bought the official piano book for these and am now trying to play them. Not going so well though. Dumb fingers.
