I've read through all four pages of the theory and I'm fascinated by it -- but although you claim that the theory involves "everybody", I think you've left an exceedingly important piece off the board -- Snape. I think his role needs to be addressed -- and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Snapefan, I'm saying it because it's evident from the very first book in the series that Snape will play an important role both in Harry's school life and (from GoF on at least) in the Second War.

Any thoughts on this?

I was wondering about Snape too actually. If your theory is true (and it's an awesome theory, btw) then Snape would have to do something very important in one or both of the next books. Dumbledore trusts Snape and never wavers in his trust. He even sends him out to do a private errand for him at the end of GoF. Yet Ron (and the gang) hate Snape. It makes me wonder what Snape will do in the future for Ron to change his mind if this is true, you know? Do you figure him anywhere on the chessboard or would you say his errand and/or future important role is something separate? If Dumbledore is the one who sends him on the errand, then he would have to be another chess piece correct? Or would you assume he's another pawn?

Not to call so much attention to myself, but I admitted my own version, which should become updated at some point, so the board shows that I have Snape as a Rook, being the castle, because while it isn't made blatant, Snape spends much of his time protecting those around him. Also, through his deal with Dumbledore, he is intricatly tied to the castle.

So, yeah. My version has him in there, instead of Lupin, but has Lupin as one of the pawns. Remember, the pawns are very important too. These are like the most elite of all the book characters. There isn't a Myrtle in here.

personally I didn't know where to put him... I debated with him one either side as he is "playing" sides... DD does trust him, but Ron will only have knowledge of he's around for before he goes back in time.

He is an important character, however for 6 weeks of chewing on this, throwing it out to you all seemed the next best step to take.

Also, you may wat to re-read this original post, as info was added and some links to the additional info/observations sbbo contributed:)

And thank you on the kudos... hard work yes.. but we had to get it out here for all to see.

You know you were awaiting my nitpicking with bated breath.... not, but how could I resist?

I will write about the rest later, but about the pieces...

Several people have pointed out how odd it was that Ron didn't make Harry or Hermione the King in the chess game. Not only does Ron have to keep himself along with Harry and Hermione safe, he has to also make sure the King isn't taken out, otherwise the game is over. Wouldn't it be more prudent to defend three pieces instead of four? Yes, of course it would, but prudence was not JKR's intent. Her intent was to construct a metaphor.

Is an assumption, which can be met with a very easy explanation:

It is very logical of Ron not to make Harry, Hermione or himself to make the King. If they had lost, there was a certain likelihood that their King would have been killed... much likelier than a killing of the surviving pieces. If would have been prudent to defend three pieces instead of four, but only if they had known the exact risk of playing the game. And they didn't. It's better to lose ( ... )

I know I'm not one of the authors, so I can't say this is the exact meaning, but to begin with, I'll address Dumbledore and Voldemort as Kings ( ... )

Great theory by the way.

And yes, I second the question: Where is Snape? Where is Draco? Where is Ginny? Where is Luna? Where is Percy? Umbridge? The Weasley Twins? Are they all just pawns?

*grins* I am not ashamed of having a huge love for Percy so I too am curious where, if at all, he fits in this as well. However, despite him being one of my favorite characters (Ron is the other *g*), I still still have a theory that he is going to die. Of course, that's just me. I was wondering what you (the theorists) thought about his role since he increasingly seems to have a bigger one in each book.

Thanks... and, I was curious as to what you would think. :)

sbbo has some brilliant ideas, and she's convinced me some of ours were probably incorrect... I have a few ideas too, but in my haste to spread the gospel of Chess and Ron=DD, I convinved ixchelmala that, aside from certain key players, the other pieces were too open to interpretation to truly say anything definate. I mean, we had ideas... lots of ideas... but in the end decided to let other people do the work for us, lol ( ... )

That was a very interesting way of looking at things, I enjoyed reading that :)

Hey you two, looking fine. I'm posting a link to a few people's responses, so that I can show them my thoughts on it. To answer their Snape, Luna...etc questions. Just so you don't get such a barrage of question over it. I'll give you the link too, once I make it.

Cheers.

We need to add the other stuff... we were running very short on time, but whew... reading through this again, I am finding lots of things that need fixing or clarification.

The chess pieces ws always the weakest link -- mainly because so much is open for discussion. Hence, leaving out all but the most obvious. I believe ix, once she gets home, is going to be updating with the individual chess pieces.
