A geeky metaphor of the day

As someone who occasionally makes an attempt to write science fiction, I always admire a good geeky metaphor -- the kind that makes both scientific and literary sense. I found a good example of this in an otherwise mediocre book, "Synners" by Pat Cadigan. (Its geek quotient is not very high -- it draws on a very simple mathematical concept, but still. It's beautiful.)

"It was the story of their life. Not the same of the story of their lives. They had their lives, and then they had this overlapping life, two circles intersecting each other, with the eye-shaped common ground between them."
