Nutritionism

Dec 04, 2012 10:35

Today I've learned a new word "nutritionism."  I listened to a lecture by Michael Pollan (he's the fellow that wrote On Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilliema).  It's interesting to note how Western culture's relationship with food has changed over time.  He has some choice things to say about how nutrition becomes like a religion.  Nutrients can't be seen, so they need a priesthood to translate their worth to people.  There are good and bad nutrients, so there is vilification and deification of them.  Here's the video if you're interested.

What got me reading and watching Michael Pollan was a website called Food Renegade that's operated by a gal named Kristen Michaelis.  There isn't much I can say better than what she's got up on her site, so go check that out if you have time.  I remember as a child growing up with vegetable oil and margarine in cooking.  I didn't know how great butter was until Mischka started cooking for me.  Mmmm... butter.

It must be about lunch time now and listening to talks about food has gotten me a bit peckish.  I'm going to walk down to the market and see what there is that's fresh and delicious.
