This is just a quick rec, but let me tell you that this fic is fricken awesome. The author uses an Oliver voice, and since I seem to be one of the few people who sympathized with Oliver, it was quite refreshing.
There's a listlessness to this story. Oliver is just going through the steps of living his life and it is Igby who challenges him to do something about it.
I have to warn you that there's incest in this story, but it isn't gratuitous. It's not about sex, or depravity, or even that they particularly like each other. Instead it is a testament to their desperation and loneliness and fucked up love. I can imagine the entire thing happening in the movie.
"It's all pretty fucking disgusting in reality, and Oliver would hate to be one of those people fooled into thinking his life is actually some great American tragedy -- he would hate to be Igby -- but it kind of makes sense in the end, too."
Did I mention spot-on writing? Seriously, this is the kind of short story that makes you ache without overtly trying to. It's not easy to follow if you've never seen the movie before, but it's still quite readable.
