Transparent Bones

Fragile
transparent bones
forming a ribcage, skull,
wings
that can't take flight again.
A vivid, bright life with
lungs that once inflated and deflated,
now reduced to
toothpick bones;
a pair of wings half buried in dirt, a life
as if all there is left is a
wisp of smoke.

A couple of days ago I was weeding the garden and I drew back in surprise when I saw the skeleton of a small bird less than a foot away from me.
