I was hustling to the PATH this morning, along with the normal giant aggressive throng of daily commuters, when a thin homeless man stumbled through the crowd holding an unlit cigarette over his head and very quietly sang the chorus of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. Depressing.

I'm not sure if you read the Best American Non-Required Reading compilations or not, but there's a pretty amazing essay in the latest one about a related topic. They took the famous violin player Joshua Bell and placed him in a busy subway to see if people stopped to notice the level of musicianship or the beauty of his music. It's an interesting social experiment. Worth reading.
