Who knew I could experience the fun of an earthquake while sitting in Wisconsin?
Yesterday afternoon I was at work quietly when the whole building shook for a few seconds. My first thought was that something in the basement of a nearby building exploded. (not entirely unlikely since I work right in the middle of a big research university). My colleague, from California, felt right at home.
Turns out what we felt was an ice quake. The ice covering Lake Mendota did some major expanding and/or contracting and produced vibrations large enough to register on the geology department's seismology meter. In some buildings pictures even fell off of walls. Wacky.
There are always a bunch of retired guys ice fishing out on the lake. I wonder what it was like for them.
