[Action -- 848 Goldberg Street]

[Oh, joy, waking up in a strange bed. Nothing suspicious about that, no. Well, being who he was, Alfred had meetings around the world so such a thing shouldn't be too out of the ordinary.

But that was waking up to a different place.

A different time was another story ( Read more... )

America. Nice to hear from you, I suppose. You're not going to be of much use, though.

[Sorry, hero. Estonia's just giving you the facts.]

[just laughs]

You should change the inflection of your voice when you're joking, you know, or people will think you're being serious!

Of course I can help! I can do more than help!

I just need to figure out what I need to do.

And that's where you come in! Fill in me, would you?

I've only been here a couple of months, but what I've been able to ascertain so far is that we're in some sort of closely monitored, alternate reality dictatorship that no one knows how to get out of or even if you can get out of it. An assortment of universes and planets seem to be represented and, ah, every so often, we get completed screwed over using various control techniques.

So basically the point of this is to overthrow these dictators, right? Like leveling up and getting a super awesome ultimate weapon?

It's not really... Think of it less like a video game you need to beat and more like a holodeck you're trapped in. A really sadistic holodeck with finite possibilities and some really disturbing characters to fill out the world. [If you've never caught on, America, Estonia only talks to you because he likes your tech and science fiction. Whoops. His tone grows a bit more sombre, though.] It's not as simple as overthrowing a dictatorship. We could have done that already.

Sooooo you're basically saying no matter what we do in the world, it won't have any affect at all because it'll just reset itself because it's not really reality.

Basically, yeah. It's... actually pretty hard to say just how real this is, compared to our usual lives. For the most part, though, we're just stuck in this loop.

Mmn.

But even in a loop, there has to be some break, right? It can't be impenetrable.

webfreedomftw October 23 2011, 06:27:48 UTC
Right. But how easy is finding and exploiting the break? I've been trying to find patterns in events here, to gain some sort of preliminary understanding of how things work, but...

[He's not trying to sound defeatist, really. It's just the Mayfield default.]

Let's go with that, yes.

The only direction you should look is up after all. Glass half full and whatnot.

So, have you found any hint of a pattern yet?

Things happen about once a month, more frequently when another subject affects it, with special regard for your holidays. Every second event or so seems likely to end in death.

So it's kind of like this town's PMS huh.

[thinks]

Hmm, that means more things should happen soon. After all, the holiday season is approaching us! Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas!

. . . Awww, but I don't want to die on Christmas. That'd be worst than getting socks and underwear.

Well, maybe if you're lucky, you won't have to die. Just kill someone or watch one of your housemates or friends bite it. That's happened a few times, too.
