Anna took them without delay to her small, somewhat bare loft apartment above the marketplace, landing so as to place Kay between her and a nearby wall as she checked to be sure the one-room space was secure. The window was now boarded up except for a small gap for observation, and the door had a heavy bureau in front of it.
Finding everything as it should be, she sighed and stepped away a bit, setting the axe down. "Okay. We should be all right here for the time being, they haven't tried to come in here yet. We just need to be quiet. They're smart, and persistent." She sat down on a box-turned-end-table, gingerly touching her throat and wincing. "Thanks for not kicking up a fuss, there. I'm sure you've got all sorts of questions. What's your name?"
