Okay, so.
Not that anyone really noticed or cared, but I was at Gencon this week past. I'd summarize, but it was my first and I had no idea what I was even DOING there. I did, however, partake in a Nero event, and swinging around latex swords is both harder and more fun than it looks. (If that girl in red ever reads this? You totally kicked my ass, just like I said...)
I also got some Queen's Gate books (Dizzy and Iroha), some dice (including trap, treasure and dungeon randomizers), three maid plusies from He Is My Master, and a cap that looks like the face of Kirara from Inu Yasha. (Why? To confuse and intimidate people. It worked.)
Made a few contacts, though I only expect one will talk to me. Not the one I really want to, either. Oh, don't get me wrong, the guy I flew home with? Great guy, just great. But there was this cute little misanthrope I spoke to on Friday, and she was a joy. I gave her my email, with no obligation attached. But I figured she wouldn't use it. Ah well.
Ah, another event I was present for was Dick And Buster's Hentai Dubbing Extravaganzza, which... Was woth it for the lulz, I suppose. It's not that I felt uncomfortable or embarassed, I just felt out of place. Someone I know wants me to go to another one, but I don't think I shall...
I now have a terrible cold, though, and my department at work looks like Hell. Sigh. At least I have jury duty next week...
Oh, I also saw GI Joe before the trip, and District 9 during it. May as well summarize, as it's not likely I'll be able to do audio rants like I wanted...
GI Joe: Low expectations going into this may have contributed to my liking it. It had cool vechicles, laser guns, robot suits, and ninjas. So yeah, it was GI Joe, but it was a suprisingly intelligent take on it, one a bit different from the canon, and yet still recogniseable.
And I enjoyed the fuck out of it. I was giggling and bouncing in my seat like a little kid.
So, suck it, Michael Bay. It is possible. And this little engine of destruction that could is better than yours.
District 9: While I disagree with MovieBob (nothing new here...) that Peter Jackson has never made a bad movie, I won't deny that he's ten times the director Bay, or most other "blockbuster" directors are or ever will be. I know he just produced this thing, but it's still a better movie than Transformers 2.
... Now if I could only tell you if I actually liked it.
No, no, I'm serious. I have no idea how I really feel about it. It's good, clearly. It has a very strong technical standing. The special effects are great, the writing is top notch, the documentary format actually fucking WORKS (Suck it, JJ Abrams. Bad Robot, no cookie.), the plot is all, deep, brisk, and believeable, DESPITE the setup...
... And yet I still couldn't tell you how I actually FEEL about the fucking thing. I suppose if you add up what I just said, I like it by proxy.
Ah well. It was a good way to kill time before the hentai pannel...
Now to finish work, and find out if my comic shop is closing or not...
