I've been experiencing strange discomfort lately on my right side underneath the ribcage towards the back. I wouldn't call it pain, it's just discomfort and it's difficult to describe. At first, I jokingly thought "ha, it must be my liver." Which has been under assault for a long while beginning when I heavily abused dextromethorphan for a period ( Read more... )

Yeh the liver is the largest organ to begin with just because of all the work it has to do, so even a slightly enlarged liver will displace other organs. re:substance abuse, I'm a big fan of mental tricks - feel like a drink? go look at diseased livers on google images. meh, whatever works :)

As for repair, well the main thing is to not go overboard on any one substance [err, like I'm doing with vitamin C right now] a standard multivitamin, restrict fats and especially crappy trans fats (hydrogentated vegtable oil). Phospholipids such as phosphatidyl choline/serine might help as your liver uses this stuff to digest fats and is largely made up of phospholipids, I occasionally take soy lecithin which is a mix of various phospholipids, the spike in serum choline will cause your brain to manufacture actetlycholine within just an hour or two, sometimes this makes me sleepy and other times my memory gets really sharp for a bit. Just take it easy and drinks loads of water/squash/fruit juice. No doubt sipping green tea in the lotus position atop a mountain would help also - repeat after me, om mani padme hum :) meh, works for some.

So far, so good. I went out with the purpose of buying alcohol today but ended up just driving around and coming home. I actually AM substituting herbal tea {which actually has soy lecithin as an ingredient which I didn't notice when I bought it} at night instead of drinking. I just feel I should treat myself to something besides water at night so it serves that purpose. And I also happen to be trying the meditation thing again which is a phase I go through sometimes. Guess I have to have an altered state of some sort to break up the monotony...and also been listening to binaural beats some. The feeling of pressure/fullness in the area it was has noticeably lessened which leads me to believe that it is, indeed, a problem with my liver which is rather frightening :\ And, the suggestion for serine has been noted. Thanks for the advice.

So far so good eh. Yeh water gets kinda boring, I drink loads of squash and green tea. Lecithin actually turns up quite a bit, e.g. you might find it in margarine, chocolate, dips/sauces. It basically stops fat and water from separating - that particular quality also helps prevent fat deposits in arteries.

I tried binaural beats a couple of times, didn't do much for me to be honest, I remain skeptical on that one. I prefer to listen to some ambient/electronica :)
