The last from beyond the door

Returned home this evening intending to do laundry to find new neighbors. There is what appears through the screen to be an older woman living with a youunger than me young man who after complimenting me on the smell of my breakfast commenced bawling on the landing below. The older one said something about how impossible it is to be happy every single day and the younger mumbled about drinking too much and never getting along with his stepfather. The older one asked me during my espresso making when I was moving out and I stuttered and said the end of July. The younger one came up and explained his drunkenness as I suspected he would, and I asked him for a beer, and he fumbled around a bit with a serious air and handed me a Heineken. I sat down on the steps and listened to him talk about where he was from which was Louisiana and so on who he was visiting and why and so on and couldn’t get a word in until he pointed at my arm and said hey it looks like you’ve had surgery and I said yes I was hit by a jeep and he said oh, god, that must have sucked. The older one who I found was Jessica talked about hearing me play guitar and type all the time, she said she’d overheard a friend and I playing together and it was nice. I said it was nice to meet her and I thanked the younger one for the suds and I said I would take care and that it was nice to finally meet all of them and then I closed the door. I learned that the one below who knocked on my door at six am and probably complained formally is the landlord’s brother. They also brought up the giant’s footsteps upstairs. Goodbye apartment. goodbye year. goodbye.
