detroit:
oh it's great downtown right now. they're opening up all these new restaurants and sports bars. it really seems like the rejuvenation is getting off the ground guys! good work!!! ummm.. wonder why it's going so well.. oh wait. could it be because the superbowl is here is about 2 weeks?? how curious. so all these bars and restaurants will be barly open a week or two before superbowl fucking sunday. and how many weeks will they be open for after> is anyone even thinking about that. once the bubble bursts a bit.. because the reality around here is that there aren't that many people, and the even harsher pattern in detroit is that even some of the best thought out ventures dry up within a matter of months if not weeks. i'm not a fan of sports bars or many of the new establishments down here.. but if they can't be sustained in a reasonable with the detroit that exists NOW, their failure will once again drag everybody down with them.
transportation:
in the superbowl flurry you're hearing all this chatter all of a sudden about a rail link b/t ann arbor and detroit, and mass transit up woodward. once again. wonder why that's going on at this moment. mass transit for this area of the country is one of the most essential pieces of the package that has been missing for decades. it would improve and change everything about how this area operates... it would enable a more vital culture and reverse some of the disparities and segregation of different areas. but we only hear about it again now, 2 weeks before the superbowl. observation: if you drive 94 to ann arbor, out by the airport you'll see one of those programmable signs reading "people mover services downtown detroit" .. same on I75. the people ONLY services downtown detroit.. it's like a half mile radius. something fishy is up. will we ever get public transit in this area? man it would be awesome, but don't make me depressed by leading me on and then quietly postponing activity once the football furor dies down.
