detroit and the underground aesthetic. keep it hidden, keep the face boarded up, keep it small, low profile.. the small and intimate circle. these are good notions. on the other hand, staying hidden can create isolation, a disconnect with the realities of the day. a mistake. a loss or reference.

it's pervasive here is so many ways, in so many different groups. the idea of a hidden underground culture. but what happens when this becomes and idea of 'purity' and creates a policy of exclusive... either explicit in the form of pretentiousness or implicit in the form of not getting the word out. what can happen is a stagnation of ideas and ultimately of energy.

sometimes, you gotta enter the world at large and fight your battles there. things need to be both intimate and generative - and i mean in terms of personal interactions not just creatively. keep it underground, but not so underground that it can't get off the ground.
