She didn't want to leave the room. It was too... well... secure in there. It felt like her grandfather's study, secreted away from all the world. Even the damned--literally damned--book was in there. But she had left it where it lay in the wardrobe, her skin shuddering at the mere thought of touching it. She couldn't... Not knowing what she did.
Still, her body was rudely informing her that if she did not feed it, she was going to be sorry soon enough. So, tense and worried, Alex slipped into the hallway, keenly feeling the loss of the gladius. She had little idea of how to use it, aside from the accounts in the book, but the heavy, deadly weight of it in her hand was a comfort all the same.
The cafeteria was right where the one guy had said it was. She hadn't really expected him to be right. And then, she stopped dead, staring, her heart hammering in her throat.
A zombie was shambling towards her.
No.
Oh God no.
This... isn't happening!
What was she going to do? Where was she going to go? Her feet were rooted to the floor so hard she almost felt as if they were sinking slowly into quicksand. Frantically, shaking now, she pulled her feet free, taking staggering steps away from the creature, but feeling her legs sink deeper again with each step.
Oh God Oh God Oh God.
There was a tray. It was in her hand. The thing was closer now. Jerkily, she swung it down, at the zombie's head. It connected with a wet, sticky thwack of plastic on decaying flesh. Again. And again. She swung the tray until her arms ached, until the zombie was splayed on the floor, and she stood over it, staring and panting, splattered with gore, and trembling.
