No Return

Jin comes home to flashing cameras and shouts of "Akanishi-san! Look here!" It was as if he had never left. He cringes at the sight of the other passengers from his flight, now staring at him curiously, now that it is clear the huge welcome crowd with welcome signs are shouting at him rather violently. He ignores them the best that he can, looking around surreptitiously for a flash of warm brown eyes that belong to him but finds nothing. He feels a pang of disappointment that he brushes away in a flash, trying to ignore a nagging feeling inside him. He must have been busy and he'll see him soon enough, Jin consoles himself.

As he steps out of the arrival hall, he spots Yamapi and Ryo waving frantically at him from inside a car. Well, Yamapi was waving while Ryo sat in the driver's seat scowling. It was such a usual sight that Jin feels as if he never left. He fights off a smile when he sees Yamapi making kissy faces against the pristine car windows, dirtying them and Ryo smacks his head in disblief. He quickly loads his luggage in the boot before scrambling inside the car. His face automatically breaks out into a grin and cracks his stiff facial muscles, stiff from all those months that he hasn't smiled a truly genuine smile.

Yamapi immediately faces the back and grins cheesily at Jin. "Bakanishi! Your hair is fucking ugly," he comments. Jin has to laugh, because all these scenes are so familiar to him. Ryo, never one to let go of an opportunity of being mean, chimes in, "And you've gained weight like crazy. You should go on a diet, fat Jin!" Jin can't even find words to protest, he's too used to Ryo's bitching, and he had missed them too much. Their voices don't sound strange and unfamiliar to him. They called him almost every week when he was in LA, calls that included lots of fighting and screaming stupid things at each other, and Jin's neighbours complaining about the noise.

They talk meaninglessly for the duration of the ride back to the city, laughter and smiles in the air. When they reach the outskirts of the city, Ryo asks, in an almost too-casual voice, "So, your place or his?" Shock reverberates though Jin, His place? Yamapi breaks Jin's train of thought and says softly, "He... moved out a week after you left. Said something about how he didn't want to stay so far from the jimusho," Jin doesn't need Einstein's brains to decipher the hidden meaning in the sentence. He wants out?

Jin looks away from Yamapi's sympathetic face, eyes and throat burning. The tension in the car has grown palpable, and no one knows what to say. Ryo simply clears his throat uncomfortably and tries to concentrate on his driving. "My place," Jin says with a scratchy throat, breaking the silence. Yamapi scrutinizes Jin's face for one last time before opening his mouth to say something, then decided against it, choosing to plop down in his front seat and stare ahead, eyes unreadable. Jin is thankful that Yamapi doesn't say anything, he prefers wallowing alone.

The car stops in front of an apartment building. Jin gets down to get his bags, and Yamapi helps to lift the luggage out. "You want us to go up there with you?" he tilts his head up to the apartment. Jin tries to sound convincing as he says, "I'm fine. Let's get a drink later, I have to unpack first," he tries to laugh, but it comes out cold and unnatural, and he wonders if Yamapi noticed. Yamapi watches him doubtfully for a few seconds, and Jin tries to look firm in his decision. He sighs and tells Jin, "Fine. I'll call you later," Jin exhales in relief before Yamapi suddenly glomps him.Thank God Jin has excellent reflexes and catches him before the two of them land on the unforgiving asphalt. "God, Bakanishi, I missed you," Yamapi mumbles against Jin's shoulder and Jin smiles. "I missed you too," "Hurry up you idiot, I have to go!" Ryo shouts from the car, and winks at Jin. Yamapi flounces back into the car, waving all the while.

Jin waves back, ignoring the steady increase of his heartbeat. He picks up his bag and starts up the staircase. Fucking out of order lift, he thinks and drops a suitcase on his foot. He curses in English for a few moments before continuing the way up with a throbbing foot. He finally makes it upstairs and stops in front of a familiar door. He wills his hands to stop trembling and tries to fit in the key. The key keeps missing the lock, and Jin feels like giving up already. After a few more tries and mumbled curses, the key finally fits into the lock.

Jin stares at the knob, not knowing if he wanted to step inside or not. Whether he would be greeted with an empty apartment, or whether he will be greeted with the sight of him, still waiting for Jin to come home. Jin wishes it was the latter, but he doubts it and his heart throbs in utter dismay. He extends his shaking hands to grasp the knob and tries to find the courage to turn it. Jin exhales a shaky breath, closes his eyes and opens the door to the apartment.

He can smell dustiness in the air. The dust tickles his nose, and he tries not to sneeze. He squeezes his eyes and think, He really must have left after all. Whatever hopes he had were dashed in that moment. He wonders if he left him anything at all but the thoughts leave him as soon as they come. "Tadaima," Jin speaks to an empty room. The sound reverberates through the room. He had expected that. What he did not expect was a whisper of his voice that said,"Okaeri," Jin's eyes fly open to meet a pair of warm brown eyes.

Okay, the ending sucked. So did the middle. So did the beginning. Wait, that's the whole story!
Technically, I did not mention Kame's name in the whole story, but I wrote the story as an Akame story so yeah.

I also actually wrote a sequel to this. Not sure if I should post it or not, depending on the response for this oneshot.
