Books to be read when next I have the time to do reading that is not class-related:

  • Ulysses.  How many times have I threatened to read Ulysses?  At least I own it now, and I have it sitting on my shelf staring at me every night when I try to sleep making me feel really really guilty.
  • Swann's Way.  It's supposed to be really really good.  It's ( Read more... )

Let's all just ponder for a moment the absurdity of your statement: "I'm going to have to start putting bookshelves in the library soon."

(H)Okay.

You know that I'm reading Mason & Dixon right now, don't you? And that it's Pynchon, not Pinchon? M&D is very odd. Enjoyable, but odd. And not in the way I expected it to be. I'm also reading House of Leaves, by Someone (Mark?) Danielewszki, or some ridiculous name like that, which is also most enjoyable and very odd. (I'm blaming it for my strange dreams.) And I'm reading a Parisian journal from WW2; it has long wonderful passages about dead birds and then months go by before the next entry which will say only, "Fatigue et ennui." It's fantastic.

*****giggling*****

I actually noted that odd phrase myself and chaulked it up to middle-of-the-night mind haze.

I am four pages away from finishing 'The Photograph' by Penelope Lively and cannot wait to have it behind me. My bookclub's November selection, we are going out to dinner next week to discuss this Arcticly frigid English novel.

'1776' and a re-read of 'Delta of Venus' beckon.

Then I'll let my lover choose one for me. Of the three books he's given me to read, two have been outstanding. To receive a book from a lover who chose it with full consideration of who I am and what I enjoy is one of the most intimate gestures I can imagine. :)

middle of the night haze? at some point I started telling everyone I spoke to yesterday night that they should take everything I said with at least 5 grains of salt. I was making absolutely no sense as of 11PM. Someone said something chock-full of obvious sarcasm and I just couldn't see it; I took her perfectly literally to her amusement.

I think it was slightly apparent that I meant bathroom, yes?
That said, no I didn't know you were reading M&D. Will I like it?

I like it, though I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read very much of it at all. I've just pried myself out of House of Leaves--coming up for air, as it were, and also for steady ground--because I know I have things to do and it'll be entirely too easy to let myself just keep reading. I described the book and showed some of the pages to Claire, who gave me this peal of wisdom: "Caroline, I think the whole point of that book is to fuck with your mind."

So now, mind duly fucked-with,
I
have Stravinsky stuck in my head
am noticing how dark our room has become since daylight savings time (and also because Claire's taking a nap so I haven't bothered to turn on the lights. Not that I need them, but it would detract from the oddness of all this)
and also how seemingly illuminated the rooms in Morris are
and just had a strange incident involving a mirror on Claire's dresser reflecting my reflection in the window. Weird. Dreamers plus funhouse.
what is so Eco about our conversations?

I'm glad you're happy.

Way to not answer my question at all.

I'm in a really odd mood, ignited by the mind-fucking and a strange conversation at dinner (it's Otelia Cromwell Day, so discussions are encouraged) and my general repulsion towards angel food cake and the apple I just ate, which was possibly the juicest, greenest apple since Eve.
