“Good argument Ian, but as I said, it's not as simple as just not drinking. I know you were simply making a point by using vanilla milkshakes as an example, but, except for them not being incredibly healthy, they're not really going to harm you much. Not nearly as much as drink, drugs and sex with random people are going to (in the long run anyway ( Read more... )

The only problem with your car accident example is that..while driving a car there are "chances" something can go wrong..and you could die, but if all goes well no harm has been done to your immediate person..whereas with drinking and things of that nature..getting drunk/high one time..has a negative effect on ur body in the long run..minimal but negative

Okay, than we'll change the example to lack of exercise. With each day people don't go out and jog a mile, they're slowly killing themselves. In fact, lack of physical activity kills more people yearly than alcohol consumption (http://www.drugwarfacts.org/causes.htm#item1). If you pair that with unhealthy eating habits, one can easily say that junk food is just as dangerous as alcohol. Where's the rampage amongst edge kids against doritos? Regardless of the example, the point is that creating a generic lifestyle based out of an unimportant personal choice is foolish. I'm not going to tatoo a recliner with an X through it on my chest. Nor will I start a an anti-dorito crew.

there are still some majors holes in your examples and truth is you wont find any that can stack up to sex, drungs and alcohol..1st off the majority if not all edgers in this community are younger than 21 because of that by them drinking alcohol theyre breaking the law, secondly the majority of street drugs in this country are illegal once again breaking the law..there are no laws against gluttony or doritos in this country and just like there are edgers out there ..there are also health nuts who want to see everyone lose weight and feel great..We also have this thing called a metabolism that if used correctly can keep us in fairly optimum physical shape..we have nothing in our bodies (not even lymphnodes or our liver) that can reverse or even clean drugs/alcohol out of our bodies completely..once again i liked to see the parents of kids who choose be edge hear you say that not drinking, smoking or having promiscuous sex is an unimportant life choice..the truth is that people struggle with that life choice everyday..honestly i dont kno ( ... )

About the health issue: acting unhealthy can have as many irrevsible effects on the body as drugs or alcohol. Hence why it's the 3rd leading killer in the United States, followed by alcohol. And frankly, I respect people who choose to live healthily, but I find it just as stupid and annoying when health nuts bulk up and get in your face ( ... )

And one more thing..continuing with your logic would inevitably mean that anyone group of people who are like minded should refrain from giving themselves a title..because really thats all it is , a title. Regardless if edgers gave themselves the titles or not its natural for ppl to Name a group of similar ppl..all im sayin is that if edgers didnt do it someone else wouldve given them a name..this is kinda the thought process that runs along with religions and coalitions and organizations..its a unifying factor thats it..I mean if u feel the need to live your life abiding by the teachings of the Bible and not call yourself a "Christian" than be my guest..but titles are just a natural part of life.

I lived my life drink, drung and sex free for a while...and other ppl started callin me straight-edge...without me ever having to say it.

Titles are fine, as long as people don't mold themselves around a title. It's one thing to live an edge lifestyle, like you described, and to fall into a category called, "edge." It's another to fit one’s self into that category manually. By creating this "straight edge" movement, there are tons of kids out there trying to be edge, getting involved in hipster trash instead of realizing the core belief system. Like I said, I'm down for staying away from sex drugs and alcohol, but I'm not down for creating a society who lives a life geared towards something SO UNIMPORTANT.

Don't do drugs. Don't have sex. Don't drink booze. It's as simple as that. Make choices and move on. I don't understand why people find it necessary to halt, focus on their decision, make t-shirts commemorating their decision not to drink, write and record songs saying I don't have promiscuous sex, and wear mesh shorts to shows that say, "DRUG FREE." Why all the hubbub over something SO DAMN UNIMPORTANT.

Being proud of your choices doesn't necessarily mean creating a lifestlye that focuses on 3 decisions you make.
