It came to everyone's attention, it was something the whole army was talking about... The King was dying... The fever that had attacked his body a few days back had not turned back it's vicious battle against him, and it was slowly putting him in a position in which he could no longer do anything, not even a task as simple as eating, without help. His days were ending, but he seemed glad...
In his pained state, he often called for Hephaistion, he weakly lifted his hand from under his covers and tried to reach an image of his beloved that he had most certainly put in his mind thanks to the fever, and would mumble words that no one could understand to the mirage his eyes and his mind told him was Hephaistion.
One day, the King could no longer fight against the illness, surrounded by his generals and common soldiers, who expressed their love for him, begged the Gods to bless him and asked him who should succeed him, Alexander found Hephaistion's face even closer than before, felt his soft hands in his face and heard his melodic voice tell him it was time, no longer would he suffer... He tried to reach him with his hand once again, and in that very moment, he exhaled his last breath...
Alexander awoke with a start, his eyes fixed in the beige colored ceiling and the ceiling's ventilator, it was still spinning a little because it had been on the whole day. He rubbed his eyes with one hand and looked at his bedside table, to his alarm... Only 3:30 a.m. There were still three hours left for him to get out of bed and go to work, he yawned and looked around again, noticing everything in the room as if he had never seen anything in it before...
He was confused... He dreamed that he was in a bed much bigger and much more luxurious than this one, and he was ill, very ill... Had it really been a dream or a vision of the past? He looked to his other side, to the sleeping man beside him, Hephaistion slept snuggled close to him, his calm breathing the only indication that he was a living being and not a beautiful doll or an angel. Alexander kissed his forehead gently, hugged him tighter than usual and fell back to sleep.
Another confusing, yet interesting story, don't you think? ;D
Thanks for reading! :D
