Le Masterpost Previous Chapter “This is by far the weirdest thing ever,” Alex thought to himself. He was in his dream, following the dark figure of his past self through this weird misty stuff. He shook his head. This would make a heck of a story, if anyone would ever consider believing him.
After walking through the mist for a few minutes, Past Alex stopped and turned. Present Alex took the chance to blurt out what was on his mind.
“What the fuck are we doing?” he demanded.
“I told you before; we’re fixing what you want fixed.” Past Alex gestured around him. The scenery had changed. What was mist just a moment ago was now his parent’s driveway. The two Alexes stood on the grass of the front lawn, streetlamps lighting up the white house behind them.
“Did we…go back in time?” Present Alex asked, looking around him.
Past Alex nodded. He was about to say something, but a light from down the street caught both their eyes. There was a pair of headlights and the faint sound of music coming towards them.
“Okay, now when they come up, they won’t be able to see us. But as soon as Jack gets out of the car and turns his back, you’re going change to your seventeen year-old self again, and I’ll be gone.” Past Alex shuffled his feet and shoved his hands in his pockets. The car was coming closer. “So, um, good luck and be careful. Remember, this is a one-chance thing, it’s only for tonight. After it happens you’ll wake up, and whatever you do in there will change your life in the present, good or bad. So don’t mess up again.”
Present Alex was utterly dumbfounded, but he kept his mouth shut, preparing himself for whatever would happen during his “transformation”.
“This is so unbelievably weird,” he thought.
The car pulled in the driveway, both of the boys in it laughing. The Alexes watched as Jack jumped out, turned his back, and ran to the front door, all the while screaming “Home Alone!! Alcohol!!”
Present Alex blinked, and in that split second, everything changed.
His dream guide was gone, and Alex was young again, sitting in the driver's seat of his car. He looked down at his body in awe. He felt his muscles, touched his hair, and wiggled his toes in his shoes. He even pinched himself for good measure. Even though this was supposedly a dream, he didn’t wake up, and now he had a red mark on his arm.
“This is seriously so fucking weird,” he muttered to himself. But he didn’t have time to think. He knew he had to just go with it.
He played his part well, getting out of the car and laughing at Jack, repeating his words from the first time. “Shut up, the neighbors will hear you!”
“I don’t care!” Jack yelled. He jumped up and down as Alex felt in his pocket for the key and unlocked the door.
As soon as they were inside, Jack ran straight for the den just like he had 2 ½ years ago. Alex walked into the kitchen, marveling at how everything was exactly the same as it was that night. He knew he had to gather the food and beer, but he paused for a second. It hit him that he was seeing Jack for the first time since they went their separate ways. To make things even better, it was the same Jack he always knew, not a different grown-up Jack. Alex grinned and shook his head, collected the food and beer, and almost ran back into the den.
Jack was bouncing on the couch, boisterous as ever. Wide grin still on his face, Alex put all the crap in his arms down, setting the beer on the coffee table just as he had done before. He flopped down onto the couch next to Jack. Jack pressed play on the remote, grabbed a beer, then turned to Alex.
Alex was startled by Jack’s gaze. It was the first time they made legitamate eye contact since his “transformation”, and Alex had forgotten just how powerful Jack’s eyes were. They were deep brown, showed his emotions so clearly, and were perfectly shaped- big and round with long eyelashes.
Alex cleared his throat and smiled at his old friend. “Happy birthday, Jack-o.” He opened his own beer, and they clinked their bottles together.
As the movie started to play, it gave Alex some time to think about how awesome this all was. He was ecstatic. He still couldn’t believe he was getting another chance at this, and he was seeing Jack again, with no weird history or anything between them. He surpressed the urge to just laugh and wiggle like a 15 year-old girl.
Drinking his beer, he realized just how much he loved hearing Jack’s movie commentary. Glancing over at him every so often, he saw things he never noticed before. The way Jack was sitting on the couch, cross-legged with his hands wrapped around his bottle. The way his lanky arms flailed around for emphasis when he raved about the movie, all the goofy voices he used when reciting scenes. Alex knew he never wanted him to leave, ever again. He wanted Jack by his side for the rest of his life.
“Oh my god,” Alex thought. “I’m in love with my best friend.”
That was all it took. That one realization, and Alex’s insides filled up with hope and a new confidence. He was not going to mess this up. He was going to make sure Jack was his, forever.
Jack was quiet for a few moments, and Alex knew what was coming. This time he noticed when Jack moved closer to him. Every one of his senses was on hyper-alert, his skin tingling.
“Hey, Lex?”
Alex kept his eyes on the tv just as he had, but fought to keep a smooth face. “Yeah?”
“You know what would make this a really great birthday?”
“What?”
Jack’s voice was soft and tender, exactly how Alex remembered. It made his heart ache. “If I could do something I’ve wanted to do for 3 years.”
Alex turned to face him, feigning confusion. Jack’s perfect eyes were murky, his face close to Alex’s. Alex’s breath hitched just as it had, but he was eager this time. “Which would be?”
Jack leaned in closer, and Alex’s heart nearly exploded from the anticipation. Their lips touched softly for a moment; and then Alex was pulling Jack closer to him, wrapping his arms around his waist. He kissed Jack eagerly; he was dying to experience the rush he had gotten the first time they had done this. It was every bit as good as he remembered, possibly better because it was happening again, right now. Alex smiled into the kiss.
Soon, Alex pulled back at a natural stopping point. Jack gazed at him, a question in his eyes.
Alex grinned and chuckled softly. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.”
A smile so big broke out on Jack’s face; Alex thought it was going to break in half. He dove back into Alex’s arms, squeezing him tight and laughing a little. Alex’s heart sang as he held Jack’s skinny body close to his own.
After a moment, Jack sat up again and looked at Alex. For a second, the two boys just gazed at each other, really taking each other in for the first time. But soon Jack leaned forward, and they kissed again, this time neither of them pulling back.
Before everything started to blur and fade, all Alex could think was, “I am the luckiest man in the whole world.”
