Majo Saiban Ends

The previous few episode before the finale pushed the suspense up, with shocking surprises and twists in the motives and doings of the characters. I really was unsure how the truth would be. I was suspicious of everyone (except Toru).

But going into the Episode 10 - as I watched - by the first third part, I was feeling the last episode was becoming a bit ordinary. The conclusion that Haruka was the real killer set the path for the story’s direction, but while it was an ‘answer’ for the audience; I was feeling something was lacking a bit. And by the time came the verdict; which was already predictable, I was disappointed. I was hoping, maybe, a face off between Kurokawa..something more..maybe Izumi was really a double agent…something...

And also I feel that somethings was not quite right. If the witch had planned to cover for her daughter, then why did she plead ‘not guilty’ at the start. Surely, she wouldn’t want to the investigation to go further. Just questions seemed to nag me. I was worried that plot holes were starting to form (now it's so close to ending). And Kaori’s bout of mania - attacking Toru like that at the mansion, now just quietly forgiven (I know Toru is a nice guy), but after seeing her so crazy, and then, all was fine again. It was just too calm and soft and nice and ending up too pedestrian. Ahhh…

So…
the twist was such a good thing. It jolted off the ordinary and really was the highlight of the finale episode for me. Seeing the witch smile. Eerie and fitting with the background music, it just brought all the suspense and the excitement from the whole show together. Ah, it is shocking for our Toru. With Kurokawa messing with the trial, in and out, the witch's true involvement became muddled. We suspected, then we believed her, we felt sorry for her, we became wary of her, we wondered (filling Kaori with bad thoughts?), and we followed our hero's plight and got lulled into a false sense of righteous. Then, Bam! She was truly a witch by name and by nature. I thought it was wicked injection of finale drama.

Though, after the twist and all. I still feel a bit unsatisfying. The end for Kurokawa was so 'bleh'. He just walks away - and that was the end? Ok, so Izumi really didn't know anything about her two-faced husband. It was probably very horrible for her to know. But actually out of all the jurors being threatened, I guess she was the safest (unknown to her) to go against the blackmailers, as Kurokawa probably won’t really going to 'dob' in his wife or do something nasty to his daughter. Would they do a ‘special’? Is that the hint? They already stressed that the appeal against the witch won't work.

Overall I did enjoy the whole drama. I really liked the cinematography, editing for the show. The lighting and all the effects impresses the visuals onto the audience. Almost like putting stuff through PS for graphics, but onto moving images instead, probably like a creating a fancy MV edit. Cool stuff.

Bye Bye Toru
