Idol Worship: Top 12 Women

Feb 23, 2010 22:06

Just saw the Top 12 women perform. My take on the evening:

Paige Miles - "All Right Now" by Free: Of all the songs to pick...why this one? I'm assuming this could not have been her first choice. Her voice is good, mind you, but this was completely the wrong song to showcase what she can do. It sounded like she was singing at a convention, or something. With very little previous face time on the show, this is going to be an uphill climb for Paige.

Ashley Rodriguez - "Happy" by Leona Lewis: Awkward low-range notes in the beginning of the song. I'm not liking the song at all. Some jittery melismatic voical runs as well. She was a heavy favorite, but this performance falls short of what she can do.

Janell Wheeler - "What About Love" by Heart: Ann Wilson is such a powerhouse vocalist, any vocalist that can't wail will sound like a pale comparison. Janell falls into this category. This is not the right song for her. That being said, she did a competent job, not a great job on this song.

Lilly Scott - "Fixin' a Hole" by The Beatles: I'm not too familiar with this song, but I loved the cool jazzy vocal take on this song. Finally a song that fits the person singing it! The vocals...not perfect, but it was an enjoyable performance overall.

Katelyn Epperly - "Oh Darlin'" by The Beatles: We're on a roll now...this is the second decent performance in a row. The vocals seemed a little bit forced, but all in all it was a solid performance with no missteps.

Haeley Vaughn - "I wanna Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles: I wasn't too keen on the re-interpretation of the song, but I did like her exuberance on stage and although the vocals weren't spot on, I was entertained by the performance overall.

Lacey Brown - "Landslide" by Dixie Chicks: Yikes....um...this was just not good. Vocals were pitchy, she was behind the beat though most of the song, and I couldn't find anything exciting about this performance. Bad song choice. Depressing performance.

Michelle Delamor - "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys: This was a competent vocal performance. It was very controlled, and when Michelle hits the high notes there was no power behind them. It was okay, but not spectacular by any means.

Didi Benami - "The Way I Am" by Ingrid Michaelson: This song was an absolute perfect match for her vocal ability. The problem is, that the song has no wow factor to it. That being said, she performed the song well, overall, save a pitch end note.

Siobahn Magnus - "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak: A curious song choice. At the beginning of the song I heard the low notes and I was starting to dread the outcome, but once Siobahn broke into the higher notes, she was in her comfort zone, singing the song pretty well. Her falsetto notes were very good. Not a memorable performance, but one of the better ones this evening.

Crystal Bowersox - "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morrisette: Not exactly a song which shows off vocal range, Crystal was in her element, strumming her guitar, playing a harmonica solo, and singing the song well. It wasn't a thrilling performance, but it was definitely good enough for her to stick around for a week. When the harmonica solo is the same length of the total vocals in the song, that is probably a sign that next week would be a song to show off the vocals a bit more.

Katie Stevens - "Feeling Good" from "Porgy and Bess": I think that the vocals were pretty good, but the song choice was seemed to be a bit mature for such a young singer. The only singer that could get away with that type of that song would be Christina Aguilera. Katie is not Christina, and she should focus on more contemporary songs that can showcase her vocals. Not a bad first effort for Katie.

Overall, this was a pretty underwhelming bunch of performances...hopefully the guys can do a bit better tomorrow night (please?).
