I've been doing the "green shake" thing for just over 2 days so far (with 2 tiny cheats, that you won't consider cheats once you read my story below)
It's the raw vegetable, green things, fruits and all kinds of stuff.
I typed this out for a friend, but everyone has been asking so I thought I'd just post it on here too and clue everyone in a little more in depth as to why I'm trying this new puppy out.
I first heard about it from a guy named Ben Elliott. If you don't know who he is, Google him and figure it out. One day I'm sure it will be worth your while. He gave me some tips as to what to put in it and just a general spark to try it out after hearing how great he's felt drinking it. After some ridiculous research with people adding prepacked fruits or canned junk, the first site I saw that actually stuck with me for a second is www.therawdivas.com. I signed up for the free 3 day shake thing.. it gives you a lot of great information and recipes and just basically lets you know why it's so great for you. Then it also goes on wanting you to pay (haven't checked out much) to do the longer trials.. but I don't feel the need to pay to go on a detox and get their special recipes when you can read about it online with a little time and effort and do it yourself to your own standards and liking, ya know?
Another good site is
http://www.articlesbase.com/nutrition-articles/green-energy-drinks-vs-other-energy-drinks-get-a-better-jolt-faster-metabolism-do-these-steps-793554.htmlBut mostly I've just been using that website and any others I've Googled along the way really, to tell me about it and what's good about it. Mostly informational.
I really like the concept because it's NOT using pills, artificial, processed or prepackaged crap that has who knows what in it. Yes, I'm still going to eat my McDonald's dang it.. but this is kind of a cool way to get all those nutrients and vitamins without mixing powders and popping pills. I always forget to take my vitamins, but I don't forget this puppy. How can you forget a radioactive green shake sitting in the fridge right? hahaha
What you put in it really all depends on exactly what those buds on your tongue want to taste. I usually use 2 handfuls of raw spinach (i make extra for the next meal is why) - but the more the better,The greens in them are great for increasing the oxygen in your blood for alertness and energy. Then I've been cutting up a whole banana , a stalk of celery - which a lot of people are telling me they don't like, but I'm just doing it to get rid of the extra I had from a Chicken Pot Pie- however it is a great low cal source or dietary fiber and calcium among other things, a whole apple, I've been cutting up fresh pineapple and throwing in about a cup of carrots (give or take - gotta save the eyes right?). I really am still playing with the ingredients and amounts to see what I like.
I think I'm going to start putting some berries and mangos in it too. My little brother tried it and said I needed more fruit haha, then again - that was the healthiest thing I think he'd ever had in his life - and it wasn't covered in sauce or fried on a grill. Maybe try some kind of nut, need to find out which kind. I've also read about using dates or raisins. I'm skeptical there, because.. hmm.. that just sounds gross, but gotta try right? I don't want it to get too expensive to make.. especially since you can't really buy most of it in bulk since it's fresh :)
A lot people put in nuts, berries, kale because it has a lot of antioxidants( some say it works as an anti inflammatory and tons of other stuff), ginger (all kinds of reasons for this one, motion sickness to dietary supplements), cucumbers.. pretty much anything healthy for you. I've read mixed things on whether frozen takes anything away from it. I think it takes away some of the nutrients out of it or something.. but still good none-the-less. I'd like to try and stay fresh if I can.. just seems to be the point of it.
I've gotten a few people to try them, I doubt any one will commit, but I honestly like the idea of it and the taste isn't half bad.
I really do feel a little bit better after only 2 days of it (with a small cheat). Of course it could all be in my head, but I swear my body feels better and I just, I dunno.. feel like I am actually doing something good while I sit my ass on the couch and watch a show or go out and mow the lawn. I've heard and read that your body starts to crave what you're mixing in there and in some cases, people don't even like the taste of the crap food after.. but like I said, I'm sticking to McDonald's Wednesdays and everything in between if I feel like it :)
Any other questions haha
