To be blind was not something Jaejoong minded. The ability to see was not as important as the ability to hear, he thought. His whole life was music. He couldn’t see the notes he so beautifully played on the piano, but he could hear them. Sounds had colors in his mind. He had never seen colors, but he had been told what they are. His favorites were yellow and lilac. For Jaejoong, those were the colors of the sky. A summer sky.

Nana wasn’t blind, but she wished she were. As the doctor removed the bandage from her damaged face, she cried. She didn’t want to see her face, or anything beautiful, never again. Beauty was mocking her.

#

Jaejoong heard Nana out of chance, on a particularly cold morning, near Han River. Her voice sounded yellow and lilac and beautiful.

Nana saw Jaejoong play once. She closed her eyes, and let the melody take her. Once it was over, she wondered how something so beautiful could be played by someone so damaged.

#

“How is it? Not to be able to see,” she asked.

“I can see,” Jaejoong smiled at the sound of her voice. “Just not like you.”

“How do you see, then?”

“With colors I imagine.”

“How do you see me?”

“You’re summer, bright and yellow and lilac, alive and beautiful.”

“You don’t know what yellow looks like,” Nana sighed. “Yellow could be ugly.”

“Not to me.”

#

Jaejoong fell in love with Nana.

#

Nana didn’t fall in love with Jaejoong.

#

“I love you,” Jaejoong had said.

Nana looked at him from the other side of the table. His face was beautiful, as once hers was. But his eyes were dead, lacking any kind of light, lost in a dark place forever. He was imperfect.

#

“How do you see me?”

“You asked me that before.”

“Did it change?”

“Nothing has changed. You’re my summer.”

“And if summer isn’t beautiful as you imagine?”

“Summer will always be beautiful to me.”

#

Nana watched as Jaejoong played. His fingers found the notes so easily it was haunting to think he could not see them. Everything was haunting. Nothing was right. How come he was able to find beauty in the darkness? How come he was able to find beauty in her - someone so imperfect, so ugly? Not only inside, but out. She wished she was blind, too. She wished for the ignorance instead of the knowledge. She did not want to know beauty.

#

“This is how I am,” Nana said as she pressed Jaejoong’s hand on her face. She held back her shameful tears and his fingers traced the several scars left on her skin. “I’m not a beautiful summer. I’m not yellow, I’m not lilac. Can you see me now?”

“Why are you doing this?”

“I hate you,” she said simply. “I hate you for being able to see beauty where there isn’t. I hate your ability to imagine things that aren’t. I hate you for being so ignorant and blind.”

Jaejoong smiled sadly. She felt a violent urge to scream.

“I’m sorry,” he said, then.

#

Jaejoong left town to study music in a country too distant. Nana was left in a world without beauty, or summer, or yellows or lilacs.

#

Nana missed Jaejoong. She missed his music, and his colors. His beauty.

#

Jaejoong came back two years later, in the middle of winter. It was cold, and the snowflakes that hit his face were like little pieces of glass.

“I miss summer,” he whispered quietly to himself.

#

“It misses you too, Jaejoong.”

#

Nana fell in love with Jaejoong. He was imperfect, and that was beauty.
