space boy
the spreading sky, the freedom
neither of them has changed
but you are not by my side

Jessica was nine years old when she received the visit of a boy from outer space. He was a little taller than she was, a little thinner, a little weirder. Her parents told her - the other day - that she might have been dreaming, but she didn’t think so. He is as real as you and me, she would say. We made a promise. He’ll come back.

“What’s your name?”

“I’m Changmin.”

Chang-min. Changmin. Cha-ng-min. She rolled the word on her tongue a few times. She liked how it sounded. It sounded different. Whimsical.

“I’m Jessica,” she said, looking up to the blue box behind him. “What’s that?”

“That’s just a blue box,” he smiled as he answered. “Would you promise me something, Jessica?”

The little girl held her dolls closer to her body, unsure at first. Why, her parents have told her over and over: do not talk with strangers. But Changmin didn’t seem like one. She felt as if she had known him all her life - and nine years is a lot of time when you are a child.

“I guess so,” she nodded.

“Remember me.”

It wasn’t a very difficult request, she observed. She could tell her mother about Changmin - her mother had the better memory, after all. And she was sure her parents would find him as interesting as she did, too. He had a blue box, after all. A blue box from space.

“I can do that.”

“You promise?”

“I do.”

Pinky swear and he was gone.

#

Jessica forgot. She forgot about the boy from space, the name, the box. What color it was?

#

“You look ready, Jessica.”

She looked over to her mother and smiled, turning herself to look in the mirror. Such a beautiful dress. She was ready. Well, almost.

“I need something old,” she chanted, and her younger sister laughed from across the room. “I’m keeping traditions alive, don’t mock your sister.”

Something old. Her grandmother’s necklace. Something new. The thin bracelet on her right wrist, a gift from her friends.

“Something borrowed,” she said quietly as she put on the shoes that belonged to her mother. “And something blue.”

Something blue.

Blue.

A blue box.

A blue box from space. And the boy.

Jessica remembered.

#

Changmin was a space boy with a blue box and together they travelled across space and time. They had adventures, they fell in love. She was his, he was hers.

#

“Jessica, will you remember me once I’m gone?”

“I’ll always remember you.”

Pinky swear and he left her behind.

That space boy.

Always making me wait, she thought, a playful smile on her lips.

I’ll wait.

#

Jessica sat on her bed that night and tried to remember once again, remember why she was there waiting. But she couldn’t. Take your medication, they would say. It will help you to remember. So young, they would say. Young and lost. But Jessica wasn’t lost. She was waiting. She only knew that much. Jessica, the girl who waited, they would say. She slept during the day and draw stars at night. The night sky, dark and wide above her, full of secrets unknown. Dark blue.

She raised her head a little, tears coming to her eyes all of a sudden. She didn't know why she was crying. But she missed something, someone, terribly. Someone she couldn't remember. Something important. Something old, but new. Something that wasn't hers, but she was part of it.

“Something blue."
