Yunho reaches out and rings the doorbell, doesn’t have to wait a second or two before Changmin opens the door while talking on the phone with his mouth full of pizza. “Yeah, yeah. He’s here right now.” He shifts over, allowing Yunho to come inside and toe off his shoes. “Uh huh. I’ll tell him that, Mrs. Jung.” Yunho looks up then, eyebrows furrowed together; Changmin just gives him a shrug of the shoulder. “Mmhm. No, he’ll understand. Yeah. Have fun Mrs. Jung. ‘Kay, bye.”
“What was all that about?” Yunho asks as the two of them climb upstairs towards Changmin’s bedroom.
“You’re mom just called to tell you that she’s going to be out late with that…is it her boss? Well-”
“What the hell, Changmin?! Why didn’t you give me the phone? I could’ve told her not to go! Now she’s going to be out late at night with that guy and I don’t even know what they’re going to do or where they’re going to go or if something’s going to happen to her…” Yunho trails off as Changmin rolls his eyes at him. “What?”
“You sound like a mom.” Changmin smirks when Yunho sputters and turns around to go inside his bedroom, Yunho follows shortly after.
It wasn’t a really big room nor was it suffocating. It was actually clean inside, everything in its right order and place, nothing like what Yunho’s household was. Then again, Changmin’s mother was always at home to make his bed and sort all of his belongings out. Yunho wasn’t complaining that his mother never had enough time for him; she did, only maybe not as much as he’d like but they got around. And besides, he was also just as busy so whenever their schedules were free, they instantly did something fun instead of working.
He loved the fact that it wasn’t awkward hanging out with his mom because not only does she still look young, she is young. The age difference between them was really small, just a mere 15 years and they were pretty much like best friends. It was a bit surprising though since Yunho’s mother was a bit more spontaneous that he was, she’d be the one to suggest doing stupid shit before he could summon up the courage to ask her.
Yunho plops down on the bed, the mattress squeaking a bit as he grabs a pillow and rests his head on it, lying on his stomach and staring at Changmin expectantly. Well, the near-finished pizza he had in his hand.
Changmin, noticing what Yunho was drooling at, frowned and protectively hid the pizza behind his arm. “Don’t even think about it. My house. My pizza.”
He frowns at his friend’s possessiveness in dismay. “Wow, your hospitality is admirable, Minnieyah.”
“Shut up.”
“Please~ Changmin? Can I please~ have a slice of pizza? Your hyung is so hungry.” Yunho pouts, trying to make his best puppy-dog face ever with the whole sparkly eyes and halo. Changmin doesn’t seem like he’s going to move anytime soon. “Oh c’mon! My mom’s not going to be home in God knows how long and I forgot the keys to my house.” Changmin cocks an eyebrow at him. Yunho sighs. “Okay so I do have the keys to my house but I, well, I - JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN PIZZA, YOU GREEDY BASTARD!”
“Okay, okay, calm down. I’ll get you a slice.” Changmin surrenders, sauntering out of the room and going downstairs. Yunho grins to himself and stretches out like a feline, yawning. He seems to be doing that a lot lately.
Yunho frowns as he thinks about his mom being out late with her boss, Ki-Woon. He couldn’t help being worried about her because of her irrational attitude and thoughts. She thinks the entire world is her playground and it’s innocent like one and not saying that Yunho experienced the big, dark world first hand but he does have a bit of sense in his mind to know that she was infatuate with him even after three dates.
He sighs, scanning Changmin’s photographs pendant on the wall. Yunho smiles to himself, seeing as each year passed Changmin grew day by day and became mature. Some would say he was even more mature than Yunho was who actually was honest enough to agree. Even though Changmin was two years younger than him, he got along with all the seniors, the ability to reduce his intelligence and keep up with his classmates idiocy and increase his intelligence enough that he’d point out a teacher’s mistake and have a full on debate, usually winning said debate.
Yes, Yunho was truly proud of being Changmin’s friend and he - hold up there. Yunho got up from the bed and came closer to the photograph for closer inspection. His eyes widened in surprise as he realizes that the pale boy with a frown on his face, looking directly at the camera as if he’s trying bore his soul into whomever looks at him, was Kim Jaejoong. Yunho’s mouth is agape as he studies how strong of a contrast Jaejoong is against his classmates. They’re all bright and sunny; all crooked teeth and crinkled eyes. Jaejoong though, has his lips turned down, eyes strong yet very feeble and unlike everybody else who actually took the time to dress up for their one photo day, he was dressed in well, nothing special at all.
Yunho checked the date; it was five years ago, Changmin would have been eleven then and seeing how Jaejoong was in his class, didn’t that make the two of them the same age? Then why did Changmin call Jaejoong a ‘nobody’ before? And why does Jaejoong now cover himself up so much and not before? What happened to Jaejoong that he’s always sad and lonely?
This…Kim Jaejoong, why is he such a mystery?
“Holy shit, he’s beautiful.” Yunho whispers to himself, feeling sort of odd saying that about another male but really, handsome just wouldn’t be enough. It was hard trying to describe Jaejoong actually, in words because Yunho felt that there really isn’t anything that will do Jaejoong justice. So he just stared and stared and sta-
“Here, take your pizza.” Changmin says, breaking Yunho out of his trance.
Just like a few days ago when he had first laid eyes on Jaejoong, Yunho had his eyes locked on the image even when he blindly reached for the pizza and took silent bites from it. Changmin watches Yunho stare at Jaejoong while eating pizza, his eyes wide and he just waits to see if Yunho notices that he’s waiting for him. But after seven minutes of just watching Yunho finishing his pizza but still staring, Changmin groans and smacks his hyung upside his head.
“Yunho?” Nothing and he sighs. “Yunho, I swear-”
“Why does Jaejoong dress like that?” The auburn haired male finally says, looking away from the photo and at Changmin with inquisitive eyes. “What happened?”
“Yunho…”
“I’m serious, Changmin. Why do you have such a problem speaking about him and why do people look at him that way? Why does he not have any friends and look so gloomy all the time?” He gives Yunho a long, calculating look and seeing how his hyung doesn’t seem like he’s joking but truly very curious about Jaejoong, Changmin sighs again in defeat, brushing a few stray hairs away from his eyes.
“I…have a problem with talking about him because…I use to like him.” Changmin whispers, looking at his hands and Yunho’s mouth feels a bit dry.
“Oh.” He croaks but shakes his head, swallowing. “So what happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Huh?”
Changmin looks up at Yunho and says it again slowly. “Nothing. Nothing happened between us because he rejected me.”
Was it horrible of him to feel slightly…happy about Jaejoong not accepting Changmin, Yunho thinks? The atmosphere around them feels a bit tense; no wonder Changmin didn’t want him to get involved with Jaejoong. Either he was jealous or he cared for Yunho enough for him not to get hurt. Wait. Yunho backtracks a bit. What is he thinking? It’s not like Yunho wants to date Jaejoong, for God’s sake he hardly knows the guy, he’s just curious.
“Ah, I see. So um…” Yunho scratches his nose and laughs nervously. “That still doesn’t explain why he dresses as if it’s winter when it’s over 30 fucking degrees.”
Changmin shrugs, snatching the half eaten pizza in Yunho’s hand and takes a bite and hands it back to Yunho who makes a face. “I dunno. He only started dressing like that three years ago. Nobody knows why he does. Are you going to eat that anymore? No? ‘Kay thanks, I’m eating it. Plus it’s not like anybody really cares. At first they did but that was more to salvage their own curiosity and set straight all those rumors that were being spread. He doesn’t really have friends only because he chooses not to. People tried to talk with him, I tried to talk with him but he either just looks at you blankly or walks away.” Changmin takes the last bite of Yunho’s pizza and rubs his hands on his jeans, talking with his mouth full he continues. “Erryboday tinks he jus a conteaed bausterd since,” Changmin swallows, “Sorry. Anyways, everybody thinks he’s a conceited bastard since we know that he knows that almost every single girl has a crush on him and every single guy either feels the same way or are jealous because of his looks.”
Yunho frowns, “Maybe he doesn’t want to be friends with any of you guys since everybody in our school are jackasses.”
“Yeah and maybe it’s like what people say; he’s a cocky son of a bitch.” Changmin retorts back with his arms crossed over his chest. Yunho clenches his teeth, just about to say something that may start a few fists flying but then he stops himself and calms down.
‘Damn,’ Yunho hisses, ‘why am I getting so defensive about this?’
“Sorry.”
“Whatever,” Changmin growls, “’already looks like you have a thing for that guy.”
Yunho would’ve disagreed but it’d end up having them two fight again and at the moment, he really doesn’t want that. Changmin would just shut up and not tell him anything more about Jaejoong, maybe even kick him out of his house. Yeah. He’d do that. So ignoring Changmin’s previous acidic commentary, Yunho asks, “What were the rumors about, Minnieyah?”
He feels a bit anxious when Changmin doesn’t respond, a pregnant silence engulfing them and then it finally breaks and so does Changmin’s resolve. “People think that he got…I dunno, abused-”
“What? Are they stupid?” Yunho says, his voice laced with anger, as it gradually gets louder.
“I know, right? It’s ridiculous.” Changmin shifts in his seat and cracks his knuckles, he feels like he sat on the bed too long and wants to get up and run or shoot some hoops, something that’ll stop all this questioning and let the two of them just chill in peace.
Yunho laughs bitterly and runs a hand through his hair, “Bitches better mind their own business.”
“Like you?” He rebukes and Yunho’s a bit taken aback by the sudden hostility.
“Changmin…” The auburn haired male says slowly as if testing Changmin in case he lashes out on Yunho. What’s with Changmin? Why is he so irritated? “I’m different. I’m not going to judge him. I’m-”
“You don’t even know him!” The younger of the two yells, throwing his hands up in exasperation and all of Yunho’s self-control goes down the drain as he too begins to grow increasingly angry.
“Why are you fucking bitching at me for?” Yunho growls in annoyance, glaring at Changmin hard and he’s not one to back down so the slightly taller one returns the resentment as well.
“Why are you bombarding me with all these stupid fucking questions? If you want to know about him so fucking much, go ask him your-fucking-self!” He bellows, his voice echoing off the walls as Yunho grits his teeth together and keeps his fists in tight balls by his side. Changmin’s glaring daggers at the area above Yunho’s face, hoping that maybe if he uses his psychic powers he could make all those frames crash on top of bastard’s head.
Nope. No such luck.
It seems like forever that they’ve haven’t spoken to each other, the intense aggression they felt for one another before completely dissipating and Changmin kneads at his forehead. “Look, Yunho. Let’s just forget about Jaejoong okay?”
“Fine.” Yunho says the moment Changmin finished speaking, even cutting him off a smidgen.
“Fine.” He replies back with a hint of annoyance. He knows it’s not really going to be just ‘fine’.
He stares dully at the words that stretch across the page, frustratingly brushing back his blond bangs away from his eyes. Jaejoong feels like maybe it’d be easier to shave his head bald again instead of letting it grow out from the last time. Involuntarily, he felt a pang at his heart as the memory comes back at him like a harsh slap to the face.
His mother secretly coming to his bedside while he slept soundly, and chopping off all his hair till it was all a disarray of jagged pieces and that Jaejoong really had no option left but to go bald. So he did and it was almost like he was going through chemotherapy, with his having no hair and all.
Jaejoong finds it a bit difficult trying to turn the pages of the book, he’d take off his gloves but then again this was a library and he was being stared at currently even if the other students were trying to be discreet about it. He could almost laugh at how quickly the look in their eyes changed from a difference of a few years. Before he’d get looks of lust and desire, jealously and anger but after the incident that occurred three years ago the only thing he saw was pity and disgust. Jaejoong wasn’t an oblivious dunce who was ignorant to the world around him (even though some may think that what with him being lonely all the time), he knew of the rumors people said about him, the filthy lies they spoke but he did nothing to stop it.
What his mother did was completely reasonable, she had every right to do that to him, anything. He’d let her do anything to him if only…if this was the price he had to pay to earn some love from his mother then so be it.
Mustering up his strength, Jaejoong glowers darkly at the girl peeking at him from behind her book and satisfied that she let out a strangled ‘eep!’ and scrambled away, the blond resumes his reading.
“Good book?” a smooth, warm voice asks him and Jaejoong looks up to see a tall, tanned male grinning back at him. The blond doesn’t say anything, blinks at him a few times before returning back to his book.
Whoever this guy was, he was persistent because he took off his bag and sat down on the armchair beside Jaejoong although he didn’t really care that much, Jaejoong felt that this guy was going to be troublesome so he shifted his body to face the other direction.
“Jaejoong, isn’t it? I heard a lot about you,” Jaejoong almost snorted, who didn’t? “But I never see you anywhere.”
It’s almost as if Yunho was talking to a wall, Jaejoong didn’t even bother acknowledging his presence and Changmin’s words from before kept echoing back in his head. “People tried to talk with him, I tried to talk with him but he either just looks at you blankly or walks away.” No, Yunho thinks to himself, he will get Kim Jaejoong to speak with him.
“Weird, isn’t it? I hear about you all the time but I never really see you.” Yunho laughs uneasily when Jaejoong turns the page with his gloved hands and his smile slowly melts away into a frown. “Hey, why do you always wear gloves?”
The auburn haired male’s frown deepens more so when he sees Jaejoong’s back tense all of a sudden and his fingers freeze in its place for a second or two before, as if the blond is telling himself to relax, Jaejoong resumes “reading” but it’s pretty obvious he’s listening to what Yunho has to say. Seeing that Jaejoong is paying him no mind, Yunho has no other choice but to be obnoxiously annoying and taking out his cell phone, he starts speaking in a high pitch and very airhead-like way.
“Oh my god, my girlfriend is like, so annoying! She keeps like, texting me and everything about how her like, hair looks horrible and how her like, best friend is totally being a bitch and her teacher is like, a major douchebag and like, she doesn’t even have enough time to spend with me. And oh my god, like seriously? I don’t even like, care! Jaejoong, do you like, have a girlfriend too? Because you are like, so good-looking and like-”
Jaejoong abruptly turns to look at Yunho, his face completely devoid of any emotion and it actually scares Yunho a bit. ‘His eyes are so…dead.’ Even though he doesn’t even know the story behind those lifeless eyes, Yunho’s heart tugs painfully.
“Who are you?” Jaejoong asks, softly. He was just about to answer despite the fact that the tone of Jaejoong’s voice clearly meant it was a rhetorical question, when the blond continued. “And why are you talking to me? What do you want? Just leave me alone.” Before the auburn haired male can even stop Jaejoong, he already has left leaving Yunho at a loss of words.
