Frequently Raised Issues regarding Purge

Jun 19, 2007 12:18

I just wanted to do a 24-hours later follow up to the Membership Purge and address a few of the more common issues.

1) If you have not received an acceptance or a decline notice from LJ yet - you are still in the queue. (Although apparently there IS a time limit on how long people stay in there, so those of you who were still in the queue when we closed in March... should reapply now)

There are currently over 550 people in the queue - so you aren't lonely in there and we're going through them as fast as we can. The alphabet has been split between the 3 mods and we all have vastly different schedules. Generally that will also be the reason you may have to wait for a response to your question or comment on the other post.

2) We are getting a lot of appeal comments about "I'm normally very active BUT..." and so on. #2 on the list of common reasons for decline says:
2) If you have had your journal for 3 years, but only started using it recently and therefore that's why you have low numbers or you've had a busy semester and that's why you haven't updated in 6 months or any such scenario... we can only work off the information available to us and we are not going to research your whole journal and start comparing numbers. Just wait until you've been active again for awhile and then reapply.
Let me repeat that last part: Just wait until you've been active again for awhile and then reapply.
If you are active *normally* and just busy in the past month or so, your numbers will still be pretty high. If you've had your journal for 2 years and still only have 10 posts in it... that's not a recent problem.

3) The other most common reason for decline, and also the easiest to fix is the number #3 item listed there. "most likely it is because of what you discuss (or offer) in public posts." It is shocking how many people comment saying they never say anything like that... and yet, obviously that is not the case. Obviously that's because everyone has different ideas of what's acceptable and/or you get blinded to your own posts because you see both locked and unlocked posts. Perfectly understandable!

However, here is my suggestion if you are sitting in the queue waiting for us to get to you - it could save you re-applying time!
a) log out of your journal and then go to it. This way you only see the public posts (aka what WE see)
b) look through there for a few minutes - do you discuss or offer anything illegal in those posts? If so, log back in and friends-lock the post.
c) go to LJ Seek and do a search of your journal. It's amazing what turns up there.
If EVERYONE did that, we would never have to decline anyone for #3 again! We don't like declining people - so this would make us (and you!) very happy!

4) Please do NOT pre-emptively plead your case. Give us a chance to actually evaluate the situation and decline you before you panic. Plus, it just adds to the confusion.

5) A number of people have already applied to join our new sister community related to Audio... we aren't ignoring you, the community is not open yet (I have to copy some of the mod posts over there and such), but should be by the end of the week. If you are approved for uk_telly, you'll be allowed into there as well.

Sorry for the length - but I hope this helps clear up some questions! Please continue to leave all comments on this post and not here.

ETA: I would also suggest when leaving a comment or appeal... lay off the attitude. We didn't decline you because we were bored or you were the 8th person in that batch and I was tired of hitting "yes" - it was for a reason. If we made a mistake (sometimes the bubbles blur together on the screen!), we'll be happy to rectify that. But you'll get much farther with us if you are nice about it.
