Money money money money

So in light of recent events, I've realized that I'm glad I spend so much time alone here at BC.  I'm glad I don't spend too much time with much of the company here.  I would never want to become like them.

I appluad the guy who doesn't go to dinner every night only when one specific person decides it's time to go.  I applaud the guy who goes alone because he's not going to everyone else's schedule, especially since nobody compromises to eat with him when he's got something to do and can't wait around for everyone else.

I applaud the guy who didn't go to prep school or some rich catholic high school because they're "better" than public school kids.

I applaud the kid who doesn't spend hundreds of dollars on his mom's credit card to get something so extravagant that he won't even use half the time or keep in his room.  I also applaud the kid who doesn't go to Best Buy and buy a $130 DVD set of Anime on a whim and only to get mad when somebody questions him, even jokingly.

I applaud the kid who actually has respect for other people and doesn't plot to piss people off.  I have respect for the kid who realizes he's not the most graceful kid in the world, but makes countless attempts to appease his neurotic roomate anyways.

I applaud the kid who is honest and realizes when he's wrong, and actively tries to fix his wrongdoings.

I applaud the kid who doesn't sing in the shower so the entire hallway can hear him at ungodly hours even though people have asked him to stop and he knows he's a horrible and obnoxious singer.

I applaud the kids who stick to their word and doesn't cop out on everything they commit to, including riding into West Roxbury to watch a friend's track meet, but bailing on the way because he didn't want to leave a half hour earlier than they wanted to so the friend they bailed on could see his other friends run, all on top of the fact that the bailing kids already made the kid late.

I applaud the kid who knows what it's like to be poor.

I applaud the kid who knows the value of money and doesn't just spend all of his parents cash on whatever he wants.

I applaud the kids who didn't have money growing up, so instead invested in more important things, like social skills and not being selfish about everything.

I applaud the kid who doesn't condemn his roomate all year for drinking then comes home sloppy drunk twice in one week, justifying it by saying that it was cool because other people thought he was funny when he was drunk.

I applaud the kid who puts others first (granted, none of us do this all the time, but sadly many of us never do).

I applaud the kid who isn't so spoiled that he can't settle for less than he wants.

I applaud the kid who takes what he can get.

I applaud the father who gives up a higher paying job so he can spend more time with his family, and I commend the family who supports and loves him all the more for it.

I applaud the kid who doesn't fly home every weekend, or take ridiculous amounts of time off because he knows his money will get him everything he wants.

I applaud the kid who doesn't buy a completely new wardrobe over winter break just because he doesn't want to pack his clothes to bring home.

I applaud the parents who are still together because they never let money get in the way of their love. (so few, so few)

I applaud the parents who take every opportunity to get their kids the best they can buy because they know the value of having to work hard to finally be able to do that after so many years of being frustrated because they couldn't afford what their kids wanted (or needed).

I'm happy that people can be rich and prosperous.  Sadly, so many who are are the worst stewards of both their money and their lives.  It makes me sick.

End.
