My thoughts -
Dear dear Sam has been begging me to update. I really have nothing to write about, but none-the-less...this one's for you darling.
I was thinking about doorsteps. Both the doorstep outside your front door, and inside as well where everyone leaves their shoes.
Sometimes I'll sit there and just gaze out the window watching the world outside. The little kids drawing with chalk on the warm pavement, or riding their bikes past. The people walking. Where are they going? Why are they going there? Who have they said goodbye to on their doorstep?
I've said goodbye to many people over the years. Just standing there, leaning against the wall; watching them slip their shoes on. Sometimes, I was glad to see them go, but most times not. Sometimes I've hugged them, kissed them, held onto them tightly. Sometimes I just smiled sweetly. Sometimes, that was the last goodbyes we ever shared before those people just dissapeared from my life.
A doorstep is a nostalgic place - and not necessarily in a good way. But, if I could rewind and re-live praticular moments of my life, they would be the doorstep moments. The moments when you kiss the deepest because you know it has to last until you see them next, the moments when you hug the tightest, those quick last minutes words and I-love-you's. The door step conversations, the moments when everything is bittersweet.
So, I'm asking a favour from all of you. The next time you stand in my doorway, putting on those shoes of yours (that won't ever be as cool as my shoes), please tell me everything that is on your mind - and make it a good goodbye. If it's the last one you and I might share, I want to remember it until the day I die.
On a brighter note...doorsteps are also common places for hello's. =)
