Thought I'd just write up a few things in regards to my current 'obsession with The Hobbit.
I've been watching it quite a bit, but also a lot of behind the scenes stuff and interviews. I've even thought about reading the book again. Through doing this I've had a few thoughts....I don't think they'll be any spoilers, but I will be mentioning some key plot stuff.
* I read someone mention that one of things they didn't like about the movies was the way they were set it up as a prequal to Lord of the Rings, which they aren't. The book is a stand-alone story with it's own journey and characters. The only connection between them is that they're both set in the same world and they both have Gandalf in. While in some ways I don't mind the added stuff, I could do with out it. I think it would have been better if they'd cut out all of Gandalf's side quests and maybe focused on some of the dwalves some more.
* I do love the dwarves, as I've mentioned before, in fact it's what got me into the movies. I just found them so much fun to watch, not just when they're being funny or silly, but when they fight and just interact. They're so varied in appearance. However, it sadens me that while we see a lot of them we don't really know a lot about them. Sadly, in a movie with 13 dwarves it's hard to give each one of them a story or much character development. That's probably why I enjoy watching the behind the scenes stuff, because I get to see unused takes and scenes that aren't in the movie.
* However, on the dwarves they do focus on I'm a little mixed. The only dwarf who gets any kind of story arch (apart from Thorin) is Kili, Thorin's youngest nephew which I'm more than happy with because he's my favourite dwarf (unsurprising really, he's so attractive) and he essentially gets two story lines. I can pretty much take or leave the romantic one, I don't hate it, but I could easily do without it.
The other is when he helps them escape the elves and gets injured and poisoned in the process. He spends the rest of the movie hiding this (badly in my opinion) probably out of fear of getting left behind or because being a dawrf who are tough as nails he really does think it's nothing. However, he gets left behind in Lake town because Thorin can't have his illness jepodise the quest. I actually love this bit because it shows Thorin's so desperate to get to the mountain that he's denying his own family the chance to finish the quest, while also trying to be the caring uncle. And then Fili stands up to his uncle and says he belongs with his brother and stays behind too because protecting his little brother is more important to him than the mountain. I love it because it's really the only interaction we get between these three and yet they're suppose to be family. That's someting I feel is missing from the film, I want to see more of these three or at the very least more of Fili and Kili interact. They are his heirs. Sure, they're always together and in the first movie they take it in turns to speak (which is cute) but they don't talk to each other. I know this isn't really an important part of the overalll plot, but they could have had a few scenes together, just...something.
I even had a litte daydream at work today about an AU scene where in the woodland realm Fili and Kili are put in the same cell and instead of Kili having a moment with the female elf we get the brothers just talking. It just would have been nice, espcially considering Fili is Thorin's heir and yet they barely say anything to each other. In fact, it's a little sad Fili doesn't get more attention. I guess that's why the only fanfiction I've read are little scenes with the brother's growing up.
* An observation I made while watching the films that kind of baffles me is...why do they change clothes so much? When they're captured by the elves they're locked in cells fully clothed, but when they're let out they leave behind their coats. And when they leave Laketown they're all wearing armour, but then they get to the mountain it all disappears. What was the point? Weird.
* I can't wait for the third one to come out on DVD, but I know I'll have to wait longer for the extended version. I've heard some rumours of what's going to be included and one of them will just break my heart.
* There's an unfinished/deleted scene between Bilbo and Kili on the barge that I've only seen a gif of and can't find the video of. It drove me nuts one night and it's only a tiny scene.
* This is probably one of the few films I've actually devoured behind the scenes stuff and interviews. Then again I rarely obsess over movies. I love watching how it was made, because while they did use a lot of green scene they also built a lot of the sets and they look amazing and the stuff the actors had to go through was tough. The costumes alone. And the barrels, man I want that to be a real ride.
*Why aren't the songs from the movie included on the soundtrack? Apart from the misty mountain song. They were good songs.
So yeah, I just felt the need to write this stuff down.
