I've decided to buy an iPod if I start exercising regularly. So far, I'm doing pretty well. One question: What's a respectable daily running distance, number of crunches, and number of push ups? (for a 21 year old computer programmer)? Any idea?

Well my fitness test consists of 80 sittups in 2 minutes, 10 pullups, and a 3 mile run at a a little under 7 minute mile... I throw in 15-20 pushups to supplement that... That is supposed to be enough to have you ready for intense physical training, so it cant be that bad of a basis.?

I think the running time may be a bit much to ask from the average person tho, just a thought

My goal is to have some kind of ab/oblique definition by summer so I've been trying to bring up my running. Right now it's about 5-8 miles a week. 3-4 miles a day seems a bit harsh, but I'm sure it would work. The only thing I would worry about is the knees and how they would take running that much.

I try to do about 120 v-situps a day, but I think that averages out to about 60.

Hmm...I just crunched some numbers (no pun intended). It appears that when I used to be in shape and active, I roughly ran about 73 miles a week. Averaging about 10 a day (though really most of it on tuesdays/thursday) (wow, I never really tried to put it into an actual amount before). I also generally would walk at least 2-3 miles a day. One thing I found is that running straight isn't always the best, unless you are trying to get distance stamina. Mixing it up with some short harder runs and longer slower runs seems to be what works the best. I personally never was a big pushup person, too painful on my shoulders and elbows. But, getting involved in something that involves the use of your hands/arms is the easiest way (if you don't like pushups). I also averaged about 50 situps a day. Granted, I was playing on four soccer teams at the time ( ... )

Anything more than 1 mile is just a waste of time. As for crunches, I'm bad with numbers, but I would say a million at least; then step it up from there.
