I've decided to buy an iPod if I start exercising regularly. So far, I'm doing pretty well. One question: What's a respectable daily running distance, number of crunches, and number of push ups? (for a 21 year old computer programmer)? Any idea?

Hmm...I just crunched some numbers (no pun intended). It appears that when I used to be in shape and active, I roughly ran about 73 miles a week. Averaging about 10 a day (though really most of it on tuesdays/thursday) (wow, I never really tried to put it into an actual amount before). I also generally would walk at least 2-3 miles a day. One thing I found is that running straight isn't always the best, unless you are trying to get distance stamina. Mixing it up with some short harder runs and longer slower runs seems to be what works the best. I personally never was a big pushup person, too painful on my shoulders and elbows. But, getting involved in something that involves the use of your hands/arms is the easiest way (if you don't like pushups). I also averaged about 50 situps a day. Granted, I was playing on four soccer teams at the time...

However, now that I'm older and also a 21-year old programmer, I only probably run a few miles a week 2-3, if even that. Situps, not so much. Pushups, not so much either. But I would say a respectable daily running distance isn't as important as time. I would say about a 20-30 minute run a day would be respectable. Of course, you could probably just round that off at 2-3 miles. I would say probably 15 crunches in the morning, 15 crunches at night. 10 pushups in the morning and at night. Really, you could probably just do crunches/pushups every other day, but they are usually the easiest and quickest exercise.
