Cry wolf

Silence of the Lamb

{I do not kneel anywhere,

still useful and haven't died yet}
{My body was ruined because of you
My dream was destroyed, my mind is lost}

One in a million, his mother had called him.

One in a million.

What were the chances that he’d be one of the million misfortunate ones.

She must have thought wrong.

He tethers on the edge, traffic and the toll of an assembly bell beneath his feet. All it took - that rush of wind - and then tragedy.

‘I wouldn’t be doing that if I were you.’

Jaejoong spins, nearly losing his balance; nearly falling to his death. He leaps off the ledge, his limbs bending like springs when he lands.

‘Are you here to taunt me like the rest?’

The student named Yunho shakes his head, peeling off the wrapper of a lollipop and sticking it out to Jaejoong like a truce, an armistice - a bouquet of candy.

‘Friends?’ he asks, shading his eyes with a hand

so that Jaejoong can’t see the purpose behind them.

‘Not for long,’ Jaejoong replies, but the lollipop leaves the other man’s fist, enters the corners of his mouth. Yunho grins, a valley of hope  between the cleft of his lips.

‘Then we’ll just make do,’ he says.

{If it is for you I will fly my body
I will race to where you are
But you only wave and wave goodbye}

He builds his home on the roof, the ceilings to the classrooms his floor. It is his, all his.

And then there was Yunho.

‘You don’t go for class, neither do you turn up for lessons. What are you here for exactly?’

Jaejoong shoves hands into his pocket. ‘Maybe you’d like to tell me, Jung Yun ho.’

‘Nobody gets you,’ Yunho murmurs.

Jaejoong glares.

‘But I do.’

‘You -‘

The school bell rings. It’s over for the day.

‘How about it, Jaejoongah?’

Will you share your world with me?

Jaejoong turns away as it drizzles bitter rain, not quite sure what to say. He reaches into his bag, fumbling with words.

An umbrella spreads above them, a pointed star, an open invitation. Yunho ducks beneath it, shoulders touching Jaejoong, the pitter-patter of dancing raindrops drumming like maybe, probably, yes.

You said you hate me

What's the reason?
Your confident expression

reveals everything and saddens me
But I still like you and ask for another chance
I hate it that you have turned once and I hate your cold glare

‘I have swollen lungs,’ Jaejoong gasps, streaks of sweat carving angry zigzags along his temple. He fights to breathe.

Yunho cringes, his chest clamping.

‘Is this what you’ve been keeping to yourself?’

Jaejoong lifts sunken cheeks, coughing up dry laughter. It scrapes against Yunho in all the wrong spots. ‘The last person I told left,’ he mutters. ‘Everybody else doesn’t give a damn.’

‘Try me,’ Yunho grits.

Jaejoong clutches the railings, unsteady on his limbs. The wind catches on, stealing his remaining strength. Yunho carries his burdens, holding out for the other man.

‘You’re safe for now,’ he says.

Jaejoong exhales.

‘What difference is it gonna make? I’ll just die another day.’

Yunho nods gravely.

‘I know, Jaejoongie. Don’t we all?’

(No you're my heartbreaker

What have I done wrong
You’re my heartbreaker, no way

I am leaving you, I really am
Let's see if you live well. It’s old, twisted
My tragic love is tiring and goes wrong, no way)

He had saved jars and jars of money. From birth, he says, because he’d seen it coming.

But for? Yunho inquires, guessing travel, holidays, fun.

I thought, Jaejoong replies. I thought I’d like to buy time.

I ask everyday and you say I’ve changed (no more words)

Talk only if you know who you are dealing with
I am now out of control, continuing alone
At that very place (goodbye and goodbye)

You say you hate me, what is the reason?
Your angry voice reveals everything and saddens me
But I still like you and ask for another chance
I dislike it that you have turned once and I dislike your cold smile

‘What’s on your mind?’ Yunho asks, counting cloudy sheep. The sky is an endless stretch.

‘Nothing,’ Jaejoong supposes, conjuring fluffy elephant rabbits.

Yunho shakes his head. He doesn’t understand this, because in his theory of inexplicable reasonings - nothing is something.

‘You know what I think, Jaejoongie?’

The other man tilts his neck.

‘If people had seen you smile, they might’ve thought twice about being your friend,’ Yunho explains.

‘Their loss,’ Jaejoong says,

casting nets with the glow of his teeth.

‘Your previous ex. She left you didn’t she? For another man. I’ve seen her with him,’ Yunho states, expecting fume and fury.

Jaejoong’s gaze strikes his. Is it hate?

Yunho stares back.

‘What? You want pity? I’m all out of it.’

‘If you knew it was gonna break my heart, why’d you tell me?’ Jaejoong demands, although he hadn’t been in love, hadn’t nearly been close enough.

Was it an accusation? An implication?

Yunho sighs audibly, a long, drawn out confession.

‘Because Jaejoongah, I’ll be here to help you put it back.’

{I will still be there (at your turned-off phone)
I will still be there (in front of my mailbox)
I will still be there (even if we aren't close anymore)}

It fades. At the back of his mind, he remembers that it is important, important that he just - breathe. But he can’t.

Think of the sun, a voice insists.

.

Think of us, Jaejoongie.

Think of me.

The universe stops.

You should leave before anything happens.

How brave of you, Jaejoongah,

to ask this of me with that look in your eyes.

I have no regrets.

Was it good, then? (Everything)

Yes, Yunhoyah.

Only because you made it.

---

(The words ‘Let's be together forever’
It is only sweet for a moment
Why aren't you affected?
I am in so much pain)

He reminisces back on the weeks, months he’d spent with Jaejoong: on the roof, across the streets, out of class. In love.

‘I’ll never forget us, Jaejoongie,’ Yunho breathes, almost on behalf of the other man.

Jaejoong slips a warm hand into Yunho’s.

‘As if I’d forget either,’ he scolds.

‘I’ll be there no matter what happens, Jaejoongah. One year from now, ten years from now; forever.’

‘I’ll hold you to that,’ Jaejoong confides,

and regardless of how uncertain the future is;  they cross their hearts like fingers, bottling bated breaths in their chests;   there’s always tomorrow.
