My girls are at that age where they are starting to notice boys in ways that make touch football a sport no longer played in our yard. :-) We've had a few talks about boys, sex, changes in bodies, etc. As usual, Khrissy is enthralled and wants to know everything, while Devin sits there rolling her eyes and/or blushing profusely and exclaiming how GROSS whatever I just said was.
Our rule is that our kids aren't allowed to date until they are 16. They can attend school dances, go to movies/lunch/parties with groups of friends, but no one-on-one stuff or anything without competent adult supervision (I know, that totally lets me off the hook from ever having to host one of these events!). We have to meet other parents face-to-face not just talk to them on the phone, and we typically want to see where they live also. Apparently, this makes us total hardasses, and I'm perfectly OK with that.
I've explained that while I can control when they date, I cannot control when they like someone. Liking someone is not anything to be embarassed about or hide; we can't control our own emtions, so why would I try to control theirs. They can like all they want. They just can't date, hold hands, kiss, etc.
So, Devin likes this boy named Mark. And he is just too freaking cute! Mind you, I've never actually seen him...because every time I ask Devin to point him out she turns pink in the cheeks and won't do it. It's like she thinks I'm going to embarass her or something, sheesh.
Anyhow, Devin has been telling me about all the things Mark says or does, and if I wasn't married and if he wasn't 12, I'd be totally smitten with him! OK, so maybe I still am, but definately in a non-pedo way. Here's a small rundown of the cute little things he's done:
*Everyday as they walk out of class, he asks Devin if he can carry her bookbag for her.
*In band, if he gets there first, he sets up Devins music stand.
*After a friend told Devin that Mark liked her via text message, Mark apologized to Devin saying that he wanted to tell her himself and in person.
*He's not very athletically inclined, but he knows that Devin is a jock, so he joined the track team to impress her.
*When Devin told him she wasn't allowed to date until she was 16, he said he'd wait for her.
Awwww! How adorable is he?
