First a haiku:
The rain drizzles down
The day is grey, falling rain
drips from sagging leaves.
I love the rain. It makes the day seem dark, but the colors become vivid and the earth becomes fresh. The smell of the rain in my newly bulldozed side yard mixed with the dirt and the old leaves and broken and twisted blackberry vines is strong and musty. I love the smell of wet dirt. The smell of fall is in the air. The fallen leaves pile up and make a pungent smell of their own. I miss the days when I could have a burning barrel full of damp leaves and blackberry vines and other yard waste. I know it's not everybody's favorite smell, but I love the smell of outdoor fires. I used to burn almost every day. We have a firepit, but we are only supposed to burn firewood and/or those pressed logs in it. I sometimes used the dried blackberry vines for kindling, but not sure if that is even really ok. I think sometimes, "how would they know if I threw in a pile of leaves or sticks from the yard?", but I don't want to chance losing my permit to burn at all, so I patiently put all the yard waste into my yard waste container. If I lived even one mile east or southeast from here, I could still have a burning barrel.
Anyway, it is a nice rainy day here and I'm doing stuff indoors. I baked a meatloaf and made mashed potatoes and gravy and the boys and I had a real dinner for a change. (yes, we had veggies and milk. A full well-balanced meal.) I put wine and some Jack Daniels BBQ sauce in the meatloaf and it turned out very moist and soft and delicious. I've been doing laundry and cutting out quilt squares and now I think I'm going to go sew up some things I've had in my basket for a long time.
I will finish up with another haiku that just came to me.
The leaves they've fallen
Colors strewn about the ground
Pretty, dying leaves.
leaves,
fall,
rain
