Fuck WAMU
In Florida I banked with Washington Mutual, but there are no branches up here in North Carolina and so I transferred to another bank.
However, trying to get the Washington Mutual account closed has proved to be a major hassle. They refuse to close it over the phone, they say I have to go in person. I'm not driving back down to Georgia to close an account with $1.05 in it. They have said that they will mail me the materials necessary to close it through the mail, but nothing came of that after multiple tries either. I had found a way to supposedly close it that requires notorization from the county (!?) but to be honest it hasn't been terribly high on my list of priorities because I resent being forced to go through the legal obstacle course on behalf of $1.05.
So while trying to pay off another bill, somehow they had a record of my old account and attempted to charge that. WAMU kindly didn't pay off the bill, but instead has slammed me with a $30.00 overdraft fee. (For doing nothing, mind. They didn't pay off my other bill or I would have been several hundred dollars overdrawn.)
So I called actually intending to pay the stupid fee over the phone, since when I got the letter (today) it said it needed to be paid off by the 27th (tomorrow). But the phone operator wouldn't let me. Have to do it through the branch or through the mail. How could I possibly make the deadline? I griped at her that this was especially annoying seeing as I'd repeatedly tried to close the account before, but she was adamant that it had to be done through the mail even though I told her I'd been given that story before and gotten something totally unrelated in the mail in result.
I asked her what happens if I stay overdrawn past the deadline. She said that the account would go "under review" and they would consider whether or not to close it.
God, is this woman joking or did she just not hear a single damn word of what I had told her? "So... they will think about closing my account if I don't pay them?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Well, let them do that then since it's what I wanted in the first place! Thanks!" There was nothing left to do but hang up in disgust.
I am so careful with my credit that this really pisses me off but what else am I supposed to here? They aren't listening to me at all or this never would have happened in the first place, they don't make it easy at all for me to give them the money they claim to want, and they're going to do what I've asked them to in the first place if I just tell them to fuck themselves so... go fuck yourself, WAMU.
