Cut out grains, sugars, alcohol, and most starchy vegetables (potatoes, yams, legumes, etc).
Eat enough protein to maintain muscle & organs, enough carbohydrate (from non-starchy veg, and a few berries/fruits) to fuel the brain, and some healthy fats as the balance of your calorie requirements -- the Primal Blueprint works pretty well:

Both these approaches are definitely viable long-term, not just for 2-3 months.
Add in some weight training -- something like one of the 5x5 Programmmes, or the Starting Strength programme:

Weight training works way better than cardio, as cardio has a tendency to make one hungrier, without actually burning all that many calories.
