Holy Toledo, as Bill King would say. The Tygs are amazing.
We just swept a weekend series from Cleveland, winning the first two games in our last at bat on homers, one from Craig and one from Pudge, and then winning the finale yesterday 1-0. Wil Ledezma pitched instead of Verlander, who got skipped, and did a fantastic Justin impression. The headline in the Chronicle was really ticklesome: Rookie Ace Rested, Tigers Win Anyway. Or something to that effect, that might not be verbatim.
Today another of our rookies, Zach Miner, pitched against Franchise Liriano and the Twinkies. After building up a tenuous trust with six wins, I had lost blind faith in Miner. It takes me awhile to really have confidence in baby pitchers. Anyways, I did recall his good outing against Liriano at the Metrodome, but admit that I wasn't so sure he could pull off the same thing again. He didn't need to, as it turned out.
Liriano had his first off day in a long time, and the Tigers took advantage, thumping the Twins 9-3. Craig homered again, as did Marcus, whose homer was 442 feet which is totally insane. Curtis drove in a couple runs; Pudge had another good day at first base. As many of the Detroit sportswriters are fond of saying, all is right with the world. Even moreso since the White Sox lost 6-3 to the Angels. Normally I hate to see the Angels win, but in this case I will make an exception. The Tigers now have a 10 game lead in the Central and ESPN hasn't mentioned us and the Wild Card in recent memory. Heeheehee. I'm so afraid that one day I'll wake up and everything will be back to "normal". By the way we're FORTY games over .500. Forty. Seriously, this season seems just too good to be real. It's like I'm living in one of my fantasies.
This fantasy will become even better in about 3 weeks, when I finally get back to Ann Arbor. I crave Fox Sports Detroit and all the Tigers programming like Spotlight on Curtis Granderson and the like. I wonder if maybe the Daily will let me do any kind of writing about the Tigers. Usually we don't do stuff on the pro teams but this is special, yeah?
You know who I'm going to miss most when I get back to AA? My puppy Angel. Every day when I have to go to work I hate leaving her and seeing her look at me with those sad brown eyes. She's sometimes not so demonstrative, but she finds ways to let me know she cares. Like when I get home really late at night and the whole house is asleep, I'll come up the stairs and Angel will be dozing in her bed (she doesn't actually sleep in it seriously; serious deep sleeping is done on my Mom's bed), just waiting for me to get home. I take her everywhere I can in the car because I hate leaving her so much--and she loves going in the car. If you even THINK "car" she perks up and starts running up and down the stairs like crazy. She likes the car so much we were able to teach her to nudge the door open with her nose (if you know Angel, you know this is an incredible accomplishment). She's a perfect travel buddy too. That's the one big drawback of my single--there is no one to come home to, no wiggly doggie to cuddle. Argh, enough, my eyes are going fuzzy.
