With a very heavy heart, I'm sad to post news of the passing of Ian McAllister Landlord of The Beer Engine, formerly of the White Friars, Browns and the The Sir Colin Cambell. The Beer Engine had to be broken into and he was found in bed on Friday. Suspected cause is asthma.
The funeral will be on the 12th of Feb at Canley Crematorium, unfortunately while I was talking to Mick, I missed the time because I was so stunned by the news I effectively blanked out everything after "funeral". For as long as I remember Ian has been a fixture, part of the fittings of the City, one of those one-of-a-kind characters that are few and far between in this life and will be sorely missed by anyone who has ever known him.
My lasting memories will always be of the halcyon days of the White Friars with Ian on guitar (only ever playing the first half of the first verse of any given song...) and everyone else on kazoo until stupid o'clock in the morning.
