On transfer deadline day, 1 September 2008, Steve Finnan joined Spanish side Espanyol signing a 2 year deal for an undisclosed fee.
He played 5 matches for Espanyol this season:
- 3rd matchday: Espanyol vs Getafe CF (1-1), subbed in after 79 minutes
- 4th matchday: FC Sevilla vs Espanyol (2-0), injured after 33 minutes
- 11th matchday: Espanyol vs CD Numancia (3-4)
- 12th matchday: Racing Santander vs Espanyol (3-0)
- Copa del Rey: FC Barcelona vs Espanyol (3-2), replaced by Daniel Jarque after 50 minutes
He also played 3 matches for Ireland:
- World Cup qualifier Georgia vs Ireland (1-2), replaced by McShane after 80 minutes
- World Cup qualifier Montenegro vs Ireland (0-0)
- Friendly Norway vs Ireland (1-1)
To be honest, this wasn't what I had in mind when I wished him all the best for his future career after I heard of the transfer. Of course, one might argue that Liverpool did everything right when they sold him to Espanyol, but I just can't bring myself to feel any satisfaction. He's been plagued with niggling injuries throughout the season and I'm terribly sorry for him. I hope next season will be a lot more successful for him.
