about once a generation, a new (perceived) threat sends conservatives into a frenzy over the destruction of values, decline of western society, etc., etc.
within decades, those apparently outlandish shows of liberalism become the status quo, with few of the anticipated harms actually appearing but with significant civil rights' gains.
same goes for racial segregation, attitudes towards Catholics (will not hire ---> camelot), and slavery, though, granted, the South truly has not been the same since the end of the Civil War.
these people will never cease to complain and abuse. they will just find new issues. Bush's position as President only strengthens the resolve of the anti-gay movement, because its supporters feel that they can claim a crucial ally in the Oval Office.
