Day-to-Day: Thurs "Tsk!"

Jan 05, 2006 20:30

With keen apprehension I waited, wondering how these next few days would affect my life... but alas now, I am heart-broken!
CES 2006 is at this time taking place in Las Vegas. There were rumours that Sony would be showcasing a new prosumer / advanced digital camera. Those rumours were wrong!
Some background...
Sony has four cameras in its prosumer-advanced range. The F828 is Sony's flagship camera; expensive, high image size, good sensor, with a good zoom, and packed with features. It is however rather ancient, announced mid 2003. The V3 is an advanced compact camera; mid-priced, also high image size, okay sensor, okay zoom, packed with features. It is just not as powerful (nor as bulky) as the F828; and it was announced mid 2004. The H1 is fairly cheap, has an okay image size, not so good sensor, a super zoom (x12), lacks the features of the others but does have anti-shake technology. It was announced early in 2005. Finally; the R1 is a unique camera, of a class of its own. It is expensive, has a very high image size, great sensor, okay zoom, yet is not as feature strong as the other cameras. It was announced late 2005, and is commonly taken by everyone except Sony as the successor to the F828.
When rumours circulated that a new model would be announced the obvious camera to be advanced was the V3 line, which happens to be the camera I want to buy. The R1 is too new to be renewed, and any official successor to the F828 would have to also succeed the R1 or else it would be a flop. The H1 is pretty much exactly spot on, for its market, as things currently stand. Whereas the V3 was a very well rated camera that Sony has discontinued, suggesting it is about to make a V4.
