Mobile phone antics
My phone was not receiving text messages on Wednesday evening, so I turned it off. When I turned it back on, it switched off immediately. Repeat infinitum. I phoned the Vodafone support line and they said it was a problem with the handset, so they would give me a warranty replacement by Friday.
I deal with phones as part of my job, and the major supplier I handle is Vodafone. I immediately swapped my SIM with my old SIM, and put my new SIM into my old phone. Old phone did not turn off immediately but it came up as zero reception. New phone worked fine (also with zero reception, expected since my old SIM was inactive).
The next day, Thursday, I phoned again and got them to re-activate my old SIM. This worked fine, and my phone started working again. I asked that the warranty replacement should stand; my explanation to them was that the handset should not kill my SIM, so it would be good to have a handset which did not do that. The actual reason was that I have a tendency to sprint for buses, and on occasion I have forgotten to secure the pocket with my phone in it, so my phone has on occasion bounced quite energetically off tarmac. Doh.
One critical moment
Our search for a new flat has been a little stressy; mainly due to the impending doom I forsee when there are no more flats to look at, and our difficulties in committing to any flat we have seen. I am a little over optimistic, naiive, and at times plain rash - so it is probably a good thing that both Aaron and Wendy are a little more conservative. Thursday, I was very enthausiastic that we should commit to the flat we were looking at, until I asked the wrong question, and in that critical moment my mind was set against the property.
"What council tax band is this property?"
"Tax band G"
"Ah. Right."
We left shortly after.
Are we missionaries again?
I am quite strongly objectional to this whole protest march thing. I think that if people want to make a positive change, they should make a sustained effort to support the appropriate groups (such as Real World, Fairtrade, etc.). I do not think that their presence over one weekend or even one week will really make a significant difference, and I feel that the gimmicks are insulting. I use the white clothes as example, do we really think we are Christian Missionaries again? Have we not learnt anything from the damage they caused? It's all just so pretentious.
