By the time it was over, Jiyong was so shocked his voice had left him. After three months of psychiatric care, and working with the best of the best still silence. He simply was unable to bring himself to utter a word.
Over time he grew more comfortable, and on occasion he would laugh quietly and on most mornings awake with a scream, but his words didn’t really return. He’d taken up sign language for basic communication, and he carried a pad of paper and a pen at all times.
He’d quite his job, and for a long time couldn’t bring himself to work. He was a DJ and it was hard laying down tracks after everything… Luckily for him, he had good friends who where more than willing to kick him in the ass and get him going again.
You’re probably wondering what happened. Well it went something like this.
Jiyong and Dong Wook had been perfect for each other. They’d met in high school through a mutual friend, Taeyang, and hit it off quiet well. They’d started dating almost a year after knowing one another. It was a cute and classical relationship, Dong Wook supported Jiyong in his music career like no other and before too long Jiyong was a huge success. He was making tracks for the best of the best. Everyone wanted Jiyong to lay a beat down for them, or to remix their songs. He was known as G-Dragon, because only a dragon could swoop in from nowhere and cause such a commotion, while setting the music a blaze. Life was good. Jiyong loved his work, and Dong Wook never seemed to mind the fact that Jiyong had to work late a lot, always seemed to welcome the fact that Jiyong was a hard worker. He loved accompanying Jiyong to all of the “It” parties and award shows. They were living the dream.
But dreams can quickly turn to nightmares. No one saw it coming, certainly not Jiyong.
“Baby, I’m home!” Jiyong called happily as he entered their house. “Sorry, I called to warn you I’d be late you got my message right?”
“Yeah, I just finished up dinner; you’ve the best of timing.”
Jiyong smiled and sat down at the meal. He took a few bites before grabbing a drink. “Is it hot in here or what?” He laughed and started to slur slightly as he pulled at his shirt. The room started to blur around the edges of his vision and every motion seemed to be moving in steps. His body was growing heaving as his brain sluggishly realized he was being drugged. “What did you do?” He called out to Dong Wook as he looked over to his beloved, who shook his head in response. “Why are you doing this to me? I love you!” Jiyong cried as he fought to stay awake, “Why would you want to hurt me? You love me too…”
“I’m going to save us.” Was the response he got before blackness dove in and stole him away.
When Jiyong woke up a few hours later, his shoulder was burning and there was a dank coppery smell to the air. He slowly turned his head to his shoulder and realized there was a wound there. He didn’t know what was going on and everything was so blurred. That’s when he saw Dong Wook. Jiyong would have screamed if he could have, but nothing was coming out. He listened as the sirens of the ambulance were starting to grow louder.
Dong Wook laid before him, a gun in his and a bullet in his brain. Jiyong struggled to get to the door. He slid down on the kitchen table and paused for breath, he was bleeding so badly and his arm was in such pain. That’s when he found the note, stuck to the fridge like a causal reminder to take out the trash.
Jiyong couldn’t make out the words, but he had a feeling he already knew what had happened. Dong Wook had tried to kill him before killing himself and that was the suicide note. Jiyong heard a pounding on the door before the sound of wood splitting. The footsteps were growing louder as he collapsed to the floor. Tears gushed down his face as he mourned his lover. He just couldn’t understand what was so wrong.
“Sir, we’re here to help you. Can you walk?”
Jiyong closed his eyes and shook his head “no”.
“I need you to keep your eyes open and stay awake, can you speak?”
Jiyong opened his eyes and looked to the woman, shaking his head no again before pointing to the bedroom.
“Is there another person in here?” She asked as she lightly touched Jiyong’s arm, assessing the damage.
Jiyong nodded and groaned a bit when she touched his shoulder.
“Mr. Lee, check the bedroom. This one has been shot. Sir, have you been taking any narcotics or been drinking today?”
Jiyong shook his head no and cried out as she added pressure to his arm.
“Alright, we are going to move you okay, It’s going to hurt. Can you speak at all?”
Jiyong shook his head again before she put a brace on his neck and laid him flat on his back.
“My name is Mrs. Choi, and this is my assistant Mr. Kim, we’re going to take you to the hospital. You’ve been shot. It’s going to be alright.”
Three days later he was removed from ICU. Taeyang informed him about Dong Wook’s passing, and hoping he’d say something. No words came. Nothing came. Jiyong quickly quite his job and went into a deep slump.
Two years later the words still weren’t there. He’d barely managed to crawl out of his slump, and most likely wouldn’t have done it at all had it not been for his friends.
This brings us back to the present. Jiyong moved closer to the city in a smaller house and thanks to his savings account, he even put a small studio in it. Plus his house was walking distance from the night club that he was working at, and the diner that Taeyang owned. It was as close to perfect as he was going to get.
After finishing up his set for the night and packing up his things, Jiyong headed over to the diner. After a brisk walk Jiyong entered the door and went to his booth and sat down. And he pulled out his laptop and started working on a new set. He never needed to order, Taeyang always cooked his food personally, so there was no need to worry.
“Hi there,” A deep jazzy voice spoke to his side. “What can I get for you?” Jiyong looked over to the guy and blinked. He was handsome, sharp defined features that made up his face and matched his deep voice equally. Jiyong assumed he was new, judging by the fact that he was asking for Jiyong’s order.
See one of the reasons Jiyong was so famous in the music world was because he had a thing for sounds. Once he found a sound he liked, he wanted it to play more and more. Seung hyun’s voice was a sound that he wished he could hear more and more. So he decided to engage him in conversation.
Jiyong leaned forward and wrote a quick note that read ‘Coffee, would be good. As for food, Taeyang has it covered. :) You must be new to not know this.’ before handing the note to the guy, Jiyong watched as he read it and looked confused.
“Alright… sorry to bother you then… Um wait, you wouldn’t happen to be G-Dragon would you?”
Jiyong nodded a bit and wrote another note. ‘Call me Jiyong, I take it you know my music’
The guy laughed and nodded a bit, “Yeah, I’ve always liked your tracks. You’re playing at the local club right? I think I heard your mixes there the other day.”
Jiyong nodded again. ‘Yeah, I’ve been working there for a bit. Did you just start here?’
“Uh, yeah, I’ll go get your coffee and be right back. I’m sorry for bothering you again.”
‘It’s alright, I’d love to chat with you again sometime.’
Jiyong smiled as he watched Seung hyun read the note before he turned to head to the counter where the coffee was. Tae hee then walked over and filled up his cup.
“Yo, Jiyong! I missed you yesterday! How’s it going?”
Jiyong nodded and jotted down a quick ‘All good here! How’s the lovely Tae hee? Taeyang ask you out yet?’
She laughed as she read the note. “God no, the boy’s got no balls. I’m starting to worry he’ll never make a move and I’ll be forced to.” She said with a laugh.
Jiyong smiled ‘I’ll yell at him again, but it’s not doing much. Lol”
Tae hee smiled again, “Saw you met the new guy, his name’s Seung hyun. He’s hot no?”
Jiyong blushed a bit and nodded in agreement.
“I’d bet he was gay too… Judging by the fact that earlier a chick asked for his number and he turned her down. She was hot too, dressed for a night out. I loved her shoes, Gucci I’d bet… Which reminds me you owe me a shopping date!” She remarked as she smirked at the DJ.
‘I’m no good on shopping dates, I might be able to help you find clothes but I suck at conversation.’
“Psh, easy fix, I’ll just drag Taeyang along. He’s the opposite problem. Oh, I’m going to harass Seung hyun for a bit, Taeyang should be up here shortly…” Tae hee said before running off towards the back.
Jiyong just shook his head and finished the track he was working on, when he heard a familiar humming coming from the back. He quickly put his laptop back in his bag and watched as a plate of apple pancakes was placed in front of him.
“Ready to eat?” Taeyang asked as he sat across from Jiyong, who nodded vigorously.
‘Why haven’t you asked the beautiful Tae hee out yet?’ Jiyong jotted down before passing the note to Taeyang and starting on his pancakes.
“I… Uh - haven’t found the right moment yet… I’ll do it just not at work and stuff.”
Jiyong shook his head and started on another note when he heard Seung hyun address Taeyang.
“What do you mean Tae hee is turning the sign off?” Taeyang asked as he turned in his seat to see Tae hee walking over. “What are you doing?!” He yelled to her.
“Look Taeyang, we haven’t had anyone come in other that Jiyong, and we won’t for another two hours. Daesung went out for some ice cream, so we don’t have a cook. I’m voting we all take a little break. Seung hyun’s leaving soon anyways.” She explained as she sat down next to Taeyang. “Seung hyun come join us, you can sit next to Jiyong, he won’t mind!” She said as she winked at Seung hyun.
Jiyong shuffled over a bit while Taeyang protested.
“Hey, this is my best friend! Let me eat with him in peace!”
“Not a chance boss, I’m bored and almost done with my Cosmo. You’re stuck providing me and the newbie with entertainment. Besides Jiyong doesn’t care, right?” She shot Jiyong a death glare and he quickly nodded in agreement with her.
Jiyong loved these moments. Taeyang and Tae hee would bicker and flirt like an old married couple, and Jiyong would watch and observe smiling at their jokes and agreeing when told to. After a while Jiyong held up a sign saying he was going to go home.
“Hey, Seung hyun why don’t you walk Jiyong home?” Tae hee said as she placed her hand over Taeyang’s mouth, silencing his protest. “Taeyang here usually does it, but we’ve to go find Daesung. So since you’re leaving anyways, I’m sure Jiyong would love the company. Right?”
Jiyong shrugged and smiled at Seung hyun.
“Uh… Sure…” Seung hyun responded before quickly following Jiyong out the door.
It was a nice quite walk for a while… Until Seung hyun started to speak that is...
“So, are you mute or something?” He asked.
Jiyong just shrugged as they kept walking.
“Oh, that’s cool. Can you like speak with your hands?”
Jiyong smiled and gestured ‘so-so’ with his hand.
“That’s cool… You’re mute by choice right? Tae hee was telling me that you’ve a beautiful voice and then one day you just stopped talking… Why’s that?”
Jiyong didn’t say anything. He never spoke about that day. He didn’t tell anyone other than his lawyer and Taeyang what had happened. He stopped when they reached his place and looked at Seung hyun.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry… I was just wondering… Anyways, if you want you can so ignore I say that because I was just being stupid…”
Jiyong smiled and pulled his notebook and a pen out. “It’s okay, just not something I talk about. So you like my music huh?”
Seung hyun read the note and smiled. “Yeah, I’m an art student. I listen to it whenever I’m working on something.”
Jiyong nodded and smiled at Seung hyun, “Next time I go to the diner I’ll bring a mix of my latest tracks and you can tell me what you think, that is if you don’t mind being my test subject…’
Jiyong watched a look of surprise cross Seung hyun’s face before he nodded, “Yeah I’d be honored.”
Jiyong nodded a bit before pointing at the door.
“Oh yeah, I bet you’re tired, um… Goodnight.”
Jiyong nodded and pointed at Seung hyun before signing to him.
“Uh… I didn’t get that…”
‘lol it means, thank you, you too.’ He wrote down before showing Seung hyun.
“Oh well you’re welcome.”
Jiyong smiled shook his head at Seung hyun before he went inside to go to bed.
~*~*~*~*~*~
After about a month Jiyong was highly appreciating Seung hyun’s willingness to be his test subject. He was very good at not just sending compliments back with the CD’s but critiques too. He would always tell Jiyong about them as they walked to Jiyong’s place after Seung hyun got off work.
“But yeah, the beat was good. Do you ever write lyrics to go with them?” Seung hyun asked as they reached Jiyong’s place. Jiyong just nodded and stood on his stoop before showing Seung hyun his note. ‘yeah, but I don’t have anyone to sing them.’
“Why don’t you just sing them?” Seung hyun said.
Jiyong just gave him an odd look before laughing a bit.
Seung hyun smiled “Hey, don’t laugh!” he said lightly.
Jiyong just stood on his stoop and smiled at Seung hyun, shaking his head lightly before pointing to his throat.
“Oh yeah…” Seung hyun mumbled. “Uh, hey there’s this thing I wanted to try…” He said as he stepped closer to Jiyong. “Tae hee said it’d be a good idea, but Taeyang said you’d freak out… I’m willing to take a chance if you’ll let me.”
Jiyong wasn’t really sure what he was talking about but nodded in agreement none the less.
“Awesome… Uh, can you close your eyes first?”
Jiyong smiled a bit but did as he was asked. That’s when Seung hyun moved closer, too close. No one had been this close to him since the accident. Jiyong was starting to panic a bit when he quickly turned the door handle and stepped back into the door way.
Seung hyun looked confused for a moment before Jiyong gestured for him to come inside.
“Uh… You want me to come in?” He asked.
Jiyong looked at him like he was stupid, before sighing and walking in leaving Seung hyun on the stoop. He figured if he left the door open the guy would get the hint.
After a few seconds the door was shut and Jiyong turned to see Seung hyun walking in.
He paused at the white board on the wall and jotted down ‘about time’ before adding a smiley face next to it and putting his stuff up.
