Chapter Seven:

Jaejoong dragged his weary feet into the spacious apartment. There seemed to be no one home at the moment. The rooms were pitch black, the only sounds he heard were the small breaths that escaped from his own lips. Where was Changmin?

‘That’s strange. His shift ended hours ago.’

“Minnie….?” He whispered into the darkness. He didn’t know why, but he didn’t like being alone by himself anymore. He didn’t like to sit in a cold atmosphere without a companion to lighten things up.

A small pout formed from his lips. He turned the light switch, watching the bulbs on the ceilings flicker on, sending a wave of light throughout the empty room. A single couch, coffee table, and a television placed in a room that lacked creativity, cheeriness. It was one of the first things Jaejoong had wanted to do; to brighten his apartment with lively colors, to cover up those bare, stark walls. Of course, Changmin had rejected the idea right away, Jaejoong tended to go overboard sometimes. He had bluntly stated that he did not want pink rooms with frilly curtains and teddy bears. It was very unmanly.

‘Perhaps I should call-‘

“AHHHHHH!!!!!!” a shriek emitted through a closed door from the end of the hall way, piercing into the silence.

Jaejoong immediately charged towards his step brother’s room, frighteningly concerned of what happened. He opened the door softly, peeking in.

There wasn’t anything wrong. Changmin had his back facing towards him, his head hiding behind an oversized white mashimaro which was stolen from his room. He looked at his computer screen after realizing the horrible moment had ended. Jaejoong laughed silently to himself. How did he forget? It was movie night.

His clothed feet slid smoothly and soundlessly across the floor, he grinned at the other’s back. There was a horrible, deafening silence coming from the computer, hinting that another victim was close to death. Timing himself along with the video that was playing, he grabbed the Changmin’s tense shoulders and gave one violent shake.

Changmin yelped and fell off his chair in shock, his body sprawled on the floor. With much hesitation, he looked up at his attacker, expecting a pale ghostly woman with long black hair and her infamous death rattle. Beads of sweat dripped from his forehead as he clutched his rapidly beating heart when he realized it was only the raven haired man looking down at him. Jaejoong sniggered slightly, smiling toothily and feeling accomplished.

Changmin glared at him, frowning. “You’re so mean!” He seized the stuffed animal and shoved it towards him.

“Who told you to watch The Grudge by yourself with the lights off?” He moved the mouse of the computer and clicked pause.

“I’m betting with Kibum, you know my co-worker? Whoever can last through the movie with the least amount of screams wins.”

“Heh? How do you know who screams the least?”

Changmin pointed to the small object sitting next to the monitor. “I have my camera set to night vision.”

“It must be a lot of money, you guys are wimps.” Jaejoong chuckled.

“Yah! I’m braver than you!” he slapped him playfully and glanced at the computer screen.

“I’m guessing at least a hundred dollars.” he rubbed his arm with a pained expression.

“Yeah, four hundred dollars. I’m not going to lose! That dude’s crazy, easy money from me, he says.”

“Well it’s true.”

Changmin let out a sigh and stared unwillingly at the movie he was watching. “No! He’s not going to win! Shim Changmin never loses!!” He waved his closed fist in the air.

“Have fun sleeping tonight.”

“I will!” He took one glance at the clock and stared at his hyung questioningly. “Jae, don’t you get off at eighth?”

“Oh…” his smile disappeared. “I was fired.”

“What?! Again?”

Jaejoong sat on his bed and let out a sigh. “Someone harassed me on the job and complained when I didn’t want to go home with them. You know; the usual.” He gently stroked the ears of his mashimaro.

“It’s the third time this month…”

“I know Min, I know.” He shifted his body and laid his head against the pillow, staring blankly at the ceiling. “I really want to just find a job with trustworthy customers, and settle into a new apartment before I start annoying you.”

“I don’t find you troublesome…most of the time...” Changmin paused.

Jaejoong turned to look at the man, who seemed to be pondering over something. “What is it?”

I have a friend of mine. He works and owns at this restaurant two miles away from here with his boyfriend. I think I can get you a job there without having to worry about losing it.”

“Really? That would be great!”

“Alright then, let me ring up Junsu.”

----------

Yunho held the bundle of soft blankets wrapped around a fragile body, delicately cuddling it in his arms. He cooed softly, his soothing voice urging the newborn to stop wailing. “Sh…don’t cry, daddy’s here.”

He smiled. His child, his own child just came out into the world merely just three weeks ago. He was ecstatic, so wonderfully overjoyed when he held his baby boy in his arms for the very first time. Yunho had completely forgotten (only then) who that man, Jaejoong was.

Seul Gi was busy today, doing something Yunho hadn’t really remembered. After all, she notified him at the time when he stood over the baby’s carriage, his smiling face hovering over the child. He was preoccupied with grasping the little fingers and mumbling words that made no sense, smiling when he heard the adorable laughs ring in his ears.

So yes, this was how he ended up standing in front of Seoul’s NationalUniversityHospital. Surprisingly, this was the first he came in for the boy’s checkup. His child needed to take a few vaccines.

The funny thing was; his baby was left unnamed after Seul Gi had given birth. There was a slight disagreement.

Yunho walked into the waiting room, where workers had attempted to make the atmosphere as cheerful as possible with bright, bold colors. He sat on a cushioned chair, looking at the baby, who had fallen asleep with his thumb in his mouth after listening to the deep, melodic voice of his father.

“Um…Mr. Jung?” Yunho looked at the direction of the voice. A woman dressed in an all blue uniform looking at her clipboard spoke. “Dr. Hwang is ready to see you.”

The nurse led him into a small room. He seated himself and observed his sleeping face. Hair had already sprouted from his head, coarse and short. He had Seul Gi’s nose, her eyes, her lips, her fingers….what part of him did the baby have? He looked at his tiny fingers, his toes, his ears, his eyebrows. He couldn’t recognize it; were they all just a combination?

“Good morning.” A man walked into the bright room, interrupting his thoughts.

Yunho nodded and repeated the man’s words.

“The child will need to take a number of shots today…” Dr. Hwang clicked the file on the computer and opened up the baby’s information. He turned towards the other man.

“You are the father, I presume?”

“Oh yes, of course.” He smiled softly.

“Well then Mr. Park, the baby’s in good health at the moment, however we need to-“

“Wait. What did you say? Mr. Park?” Yunho stared at the doctor, perplexity written all over his face.

“Um, yes. Why? Are you not Mr. Park?” he raised an eyebrow.

“No, there must be some kind of mistake. I am the father, Mr. Jung.” He chuckled nervously.

Dr. Hwang looked at him, slightly bewildered. “No, the papers clearly state that the father of the baby is Mr. Park, or Park Yoochun.”

‘What? How could’ve this had happened?’

“No! You’ve got it wrong! I’m the father! This child is mine, Jung Yunho!” he pointed his finger at himself.

The doctor shook his head. “I’m sorry. The child belongs to Park Yoochun and Ms. Bae Seul Gi.”

“No…no. This is my boy. My boy!!” He stroked the child’s cheek tenderly, his fingers trembling from shock.

“I’m sorry Mr. Jung.”

The defeated man slumped down, leaning against the back of his seat for support. “I…does Seul Gi know about this?”

He sighed. “I’m afraid so. One of the doctors announced she was four weeks pregnant and she filled out the information by herself.”

Yunho gazed down at the tiny figure. Tears subconsciously filled his downcast eyes. ‘He isn’t my child…we aren’t related. I’m not a father after all.’ He gritted his teeth ‘Why didn’t she tell me?!’

“So…should I carry on with his vaccines?”

His head turned abruptly, looking up. Dr. Hwang bit his lips and looked around timidly, taken aback from Yunho’s glare.

“Go ahead.” He muttered and handed the baby into the doctor’s arms.

----------

“Yunho! Baby, you’re back.” Seul Gi greeted her husband as she open the door.

He pursed his lips tightly, anger flowing through his veins.

“Don’t you baby me. Why the fuck haven’t you told me this isn’t even my baby?” He shoved her to the side and stormed into the room. The baby carrier dangled dangerously under his loose fingers. He placed it down on the floor before he actually did something to harm the child.

“I…” she had nothing to say, nothing to do that wouldn’t provoke him.

“Are you trying to make a fool out of me? To crush my pride? That’s it huh? You want to hurt me.” His eyes narrowed, fixed on his wife.

Her head shook to and fro, “No!! Yunho, I never meant to do that. It’s just…I…”

“What?”

“I was afraid to tell you if you knew the truth!! I was afraid you would leave me, I don’t want that…I love you!!”

He sneered. “So you lied to me so I would stay. You don’t trust me do you? You really didn’t think I’d be willing to give you a second chance, to forgive you for what you’ve done did you?”

“N-no! Yunho you have to understand!! You were going to leave me!”

“Gee I wonder why.” He rolled his eyes. “YOU WERE HAVING SEX WITH ANOTHER MAN!!” He roared.

Seul Gi winced and stepped back, whimpering from his outburst.

“There was a reason why we were married in the first place. I really thought this would work out, you and I. But seeing how I can’t even look at the baby the same way anymore and how you can’t even be honest with me; no. There will be no future for us. As much as how you think I don’t give a shit about you right now, I do. My heart shattered into pieces when I saw you with someone other than me. And just when I thought things were getting better between us, I find out he isn’t even mine.” Yunho pointed his finger to the sleeping baby.

“Yunho I-“

“Would you look at that? I have feelings too. Yes, it pained me so much, I on the verge of crying. But no, I am not weak. I will not stand aside and deliberately let you hurt me. I can’t do this anymore. Maybe next time you should remember to use a condom. It’s over.”

Seul Gi hadn’t much energy left to support herself. She crumbled onto the ground, shaken by his sharp words.

“You can keep the house and the belongings. I’ll send in money every week. Other than that, you’re on your own. I suggest you find a job. Maybe look for your lovely Yoochun, I’m sure he’ll be delighted to hear about the accident he made. Goodbye.”

“Yunho!! Please don’t-“her words were cut off when Yunho slammed the door behind him.
