Not Happy

The Borders in Downtown Crossing is shutting down. That means Downtown Crossing now consists of the giant hole in the ground that was Filenes, the Barnes and Nobles store that emptied out but hadn't rented in years, and a pretty gigantic empty building left by Borders. Closest Borders is now cambridgeside - the cambridgeside that you currently have ( Read more... )

1. JP is full of awesome hangouts. Although, uh, most of the ones I used to go to are closed. I've heard there are new ones, though!

2. Why do you have to take a shuttle to Cambridgeside? It's two blocks from Lechmere on the green line. Is the shuttle more direct? I know nothing about any of the shuttles, actually.

3. If you're going as far as Diesel and want a bookstore/cafe to hang out in, go to Porter instead -- Porter Square books has Zing cafe, which is AWESOME, although seating is limited. There's a Panera opening two storefronts down, though.

4. Again, IDK what's in JP, but if you don't want to cross the river, Seek Books in Westie sells used and new sci-fi, fantasy, and other genre stuff. Also they have a shop cat, and the guys there are super nice. But no seating or anything. Although there's a Starbucks across the street.

Thanks for the tips! It gives me someplace to start my search. You have to take a shuttle to cambridgeside because that part of the green line that goes to Lechemere is shut down. My vision of Boston currently consists of Mattapan and then a giant blank between it and Downtown. I'm actually closer to JP than Downtown, so really I should have already figured out fun places to hang out. 10 years of procrastination catching up I suppose.

...I can never keep track of which lines are actually running. I've been pleasantly surprised by most of the bus lines I use these days, but generally the MBTA is sort of terrible.

JP has some really good cafes. And a kickass dive bar, if you're into those. I'm almost never in JP these days and I kind of miss it.

You should come and explore it with me sometime when you're not busy! I've just resigned myself to the fact that the MBTA is almost always broken in some random but very inconvenient way.
