The Powers-That-Be did have a conscience, though perhaps they had existed for so long they had learned to ignore it. Or maybe it was that the greater good outweighed the twinge of doubt, of pity, that accompanied their choices.

Regardless, they played their part. It took over eight thousand years, but they had finally created the ultimate being. A female who was at the crux of not one, but two destinies.

Xander had stared down at the small child in his arms. She had seen much, she would see more. He found himself praying that she would not remember the scene he had come upon, the bodies of Jedi-in-training, most of them children no older than the blackguard who betrayed them.

All of them slaughtered, except her.

And her master.

Xander had recognized the sorrow and the guilt that had existed in Master Skywalker’s eyes. It was exactly the look one had when tragedy stuck and you alone remain standing. Xander had seen the expression on his own face numerous times.

Master Skywalker had said only two things. “I’m sorry.” Then he had sunk to his knees and pointed his bare, metallic hand to Xander’s ship. “Protect her.”

Wasting no time, Xander left. He pointed his little ship towards the outer rim. As they traveled, he searched for information and a tried to come up with a plan. They had not gotten as far as he wanted when they were forced to land.

Hard.

His small passenger had suffered a minor concussion. It had wiped the reason for their frantic escape from her conscious mind.

Xander managed to make a deal with a local scavenger. His time as a mechanic and carpenter would serve them well because the only way off this planet would be to scavenge enough to buy their way off or fix something up. But it would work as a place to lay low and he knew no one here, nothing in the universe would be looking for him.

He should have known better. The Powers-That-Be gave them thirteen quiet, if lean, years. He trained the young Slayer. She had agility and strength. She was quick of mind. There were moments he would watch her sit and stare, completely vacant, he wondered if she remembered her early childhood or her meditation training. It unnerved him when she went so still.

Then Rey found BB-8 on the sand dunes of Jakku and Xander knew that their quiet little life was over. And he cursed the Powers for their part in it.
