Summary: Time for Saya to meet the president.
Saya followed Buffy out of the room they had found her suit in, and she still wasn't sure how she felt wearing a suit, up a staircase and into a room with a circle in the middle made with white chalk. Seeing as she knew they were in a bit of a rush, and D.C. was halfway across the country, Saya felt it safe to ask a question, "We're teleporting?"
"Yep, normally my witchy friend Willow would do it but since she's needed elsewhere we have to use a circle. Everything ready Eloise?" the Queen Slayer asked the witch in the room who had, presumably just finished the circle. When the witch nodded Buffy stepped into the circle being sure to avoid messing the circle up Saya following her quickly. A short chant later both found themselves in an entirely different room.
"Did it work?" Saya asked as she looked around at the almost entirely empty room, there weren't any windows or chairs. They definitely hadn't landed in the oval office so where were they.
"It worked, this is a room just off the oval office that we use to avoid landing in a room filled with people with itch trigger fingers. It's just through here." Buffy explained, stepping confidently to the door out of the room which opened into a small, four foot hallway that ended with a curved wall.
Raising her eyebrow at the petite Slayer, Saya was amused when Buffy huffed indignantly and pushed on the curved 'wall' showing it was a knobless door. Smiling to show she'd known anyway Saya followed Buffy into the oval office.
"Ah Miss Buffy, I presume this is the one Mister Giles mentioned on the phone before," The President, a Virginian named Henry Harlborogh, greeted them his accent making his home state very clear. He seemed happy to see them, Buffy anyway.
"Yes she is, and I know I told you to call me Buffy," the Slayer replied graciously, her tone making Saya blink. No wonder Giles sent Buffy, not only was she the de facto leader of the ISC, but she was quite the diplomat when she wanted to be. It was surprising to see after the stories Saya had heard while tracking the Slayer down.
The President smiled, Buffy and him had the same argument everytime she met with him, "Very well Buffy, now shall we get down to business? What exactly is the problem?"
Saya held her tongue, this was Buffy's play. Buffy smiled back at the Virginian president, "I'm afraid some of your less scrupulous cabinet members have stepped into my backyard Henry. Saya here is a supernatural creature born nearly two hundred years ago and until five years ago, that opera house explosion, had a twin. Her twin was used in experiments by a man named Amshel Goldsmith with the direct help, approval, and funding of several members of your cabinet. The experiments were supposed to extend American military dominance by intentionally causing problems only America could fix."
The President paled, if what Buffy claimed was true then they had broken the agreement with the ISC which could, in turn, seriously damage their diplomatic footing with several ISC friendly countries.
Before he could try to assuage the obviously angry Slayer however, she continued. "Instead Amshel lied to your cabinet and attempted to use the substance created through his experiments to create his own supernatural army. Your people got burned Henry, burned after playing in my sandbox for the second time. Saya here is the only reason it didn't happen, my people didn't even know there was a problem because we didn't think the military could be that stupid twice. As it is, Saya is worried, and rightfully so in the ISC's view, that your cabinet will try again using her nieces. It is my belief that you can be trusted to handle those responsible yourself. I like you Henry, please don't make me go through you."
Now Henry Harborough knew he was doomed, his Secretary of Defense at the time had insisted that the creatures weren't supernatural and were controllable. He had reluctantly signed off on it and then the Secretary of Defense had died, according to the general in charge of the project, after being affected by the substance in the opera house, so he was the only one in the decision making chain left from that project. His only choice was to resign and hope his actions didn't directly affect the country.
Buffy, having made her statement and seen the look in The President's eye, turned and walked toward the hidden door they'd entered with followed by a silent and curious Saya. As they re-entered the empty room she couldn't help but too ask a question of the Queen Slayer, "What was that look about? He looked at you and you just looked away."
Buffy gave Saya a long look, what was about to happen was necessary, mankind needed to stop toying with things it didn't understand, be they preternatural or supernatural, it just sucked that it was a friend who took the hit, "Henry Harborough is a good man... a good man who made the mistake of signing something he now knows he shouldn't have. He is the only one left that can be held responsible for what happened, politically anyway, and the only one who can pay for it, even though all he did was sign something he shouldn't have."
Saya, though feeling vindicated, nodded acceptance of Buffy's words. It was a shame the only one left that was responsible was a friend, and good man, to the Queen Slayer.
Without another word on the matter Buffy pulled her phone to her ear and, one barked order later, the pair were back in Slayer HQ.
