Xander was working very hard to keep a straight face. Despite being in an interrogation room, he was kind of enjoying himself. It helped, of course, to know that the agents interrogating him had precisely bupkiss on him. The murderer they were chasing was a vampire, already dusted, and there was precisely no way on Earth Willow would let anyone hack into the top level personnel files. Not to mention, at some point, someone on top of the food chain of whatever federal agency this was would be getting an unhappy phone call from someone even higher up…
He’d really enjoyed his first interrogator, Agent DiNozzo. The guy, when he wasn’t trying to be a dick, had a great sense of humor. Shame they hadn’t met under better circumstances, as Xander had a hunch DiNozzo was a guy he could talk movies and comics with- and unlike Andrew, he wouldn’t walk away amazed at the lack of social skills. As it was, he’d had to content himself with winding DiNozzo up, secure in the knowledge that they couldn’t actually charge him with anything.
Then DiNozzo had given way to a more geeky type, Agent McGee. Xander had tried not to snort coffee out his nose when he realized that McGee was also the author of the Thomas Gemcity books that Dawn and Faith found so fascinating. McGee’s patient, logical layout of the ‘facts’- several of which were outright fiction- and ‘evidence’ against him was in no way tiring. It was lacking in entertainment value, but it had also given him some ideas to discuss with Willow and Dawn.
For some reason, it had never occurred to anyone that having a forensics lab in addition to the most fearsome library in the world might be a benefit to an organization that spent fully half to seventy-five percent of its time trying to figure out what the hell was going on before the world came to an end. While being escorted to the interrogation room, he’d caught sight of one of the forensic technicians, and he thought tempting her to come work for the Council might just be doable.
As McGee changed places with an older man with salt and pepper hair, Xander wondered what the tactic would be this time. Surely they should be coming to ‘bad cop’ by now, seeing as ‘funny cop’ and ‘good cop’ had already been tried.
The echo of the folder being thrown on the table with some force confirmed that theory.
Ah, hell. Why not? What did he have to lose? It wasn’t like they could slap him around, not with people watching behind the two way glass and a camera on him…
“So, Agent…Gibbs, wasn’t it? I spotted a surprisingly cheerful looking goth while I was being dragged down here. Any chance I could get her number?”
Xander tried not to grin as the guy’s irritation level visibly went from ‘extremely annoyed’ to ‘ready to hit things’. As if on cue, the door opened to show someone nearly as aggravated as Agent Gibbs.
“Mr. Harris, I’m the director of NCIS. On behalf of the agency, I’d like to apologize for our mixup.”
Gibbs covered remarkably well, Xander decided as he stood up.
“No apology necessary, Director Vance,” he said smoothly. “We certainly understand agents who are zealous in pursuit of justice. You seem to have a very good team here.”
Vance kept his face under control, but Xander knew the man was relieved to hear he’d only be catching hell from one direction instead of two. He might have no idea which agency Xander was with, but he would have worked out that they were very well connected.
“I was unaware Agent Gibbs’ team had brought you in for questioning until I got a call from the Secretary of the Navy,” Vance said. “I’m surprised you didn’t mention your status at any point in your interrogation.”
Xander waved it off.
“I was sure the misunderstanding would be clarified,” he said firmly. “Besides, I wasn’t sure who if anyone here had the proper clearance. Don’t worry, there are no hard feelings on my part. The agents were doing their job. Though I do have just one question. Tall goth girl, wearing a lab coat…”
“Abby?” Director Vance asked.
“I guess. I didn’t catch her name. I’d like to talk to her for a couple minutes if she’s not too busy. I have a couple questions for her.”
“Of course, I’ll have someone escort you to her lab,” the director told him. “Stay put, Jethro. You and I need to have a chat…”
As the door swung shut behind him, Xander could just hear Gibbs demanding to know who the hell he was. He grinned. All in all, if he could make a positive impression on Abby, this would count as a pretty good day.
